India's growing profile on the global scene owes much to the vibrancy of its cultural and creative industries, media and telecommunications. This article analyses India's media in terms of four 'dividends' (and their corresponding deposits): democractic, diasporic, digital and demographic. Although the deficits produce considerable challenges, the dividends are stronger and the author is optimistic about India's capacity for development and ability to lead to globalisation with an Indian flavour. He reflects on India's potential contribution to international media studies, especially in relation to liberal pluralism, representation of Islam and discourses about development.

In Northern Nigeria, Hindi film melodies have been used in a range of musical contexts, including entertainment music at bars and clubs, in bandiri songs used to praise the Prophet Muhammad, and more recently in popular songs used in 1990s Hausa video films (Larkin 2000(Larkin :232-233, 2004Adamu 2007). In Western Nigeria, the Hindi film song style was incorporated into Yoruba popular music, including jùjú music, and in regional films starting in the 1970s (Waterman 1990:2;Okome and Haynes 1995:96).…”

Beginning in the 1950s, Dagbamba and Hausa women in Tamale listened to Hindi film songs in their homes, via gramophone records and through state-run women's radio programs. Hindi film songs were soon integrated into existing domestic singing practices, including songs meant for domestic labor (tuma-yila) and childcare (biyola-yila). Through an analysis of oral history interviews as well as recorded performances of Hindi film songs sung by women, men, and youth in Tamale, I show how everyday performances of Hindi film songs reveal gendered and intergenerational experiences of domestic space, labor, and social life in Tamale.

The paper considers translation as an intermediate stage in the creation of English-language song lyrics by native Russian speakers. Russian songwriters quite often rely on their native language and translate their thoughts from Russian into English. This leads to the use of a “russified” variety of English, which performs poetic and pragmatic functions and serves as a medium harmonizing content, sound, and music. Drawing evidence from 214 songs in various musical genres, as well as 10 ethnographic interviews with Russian songwriters, it examines the specific features of the Russian variety of English used in song lyrics, and discusses the main views on the authenticity of translation in song lyrics depending on the musical genre.
