“… Robinson et al (2015) reviewed the proposed links in the conceptual model by Stodden et al (2008) and concluded that motor competence and PA are weakly to moderately associated in early and middle childhood. This is consistent with results from a large Norwegian study in preschoolers, which extends these results by showing that the association pattern between PA and motor competence is characterized particularly by vigorous intensities ( Nilsen et al, 2019a ).…”

“…The specific items were selected based on their relevance (e.g., some of the movement items in the TGMD-3, like the baseball strike and dribble, are less common and therefore less relevant in assessments of Norwegian children), and variety (e.g., including object control skills related to both hands and feet, and adding both static and dynamic balance tests) to broadly capture children's skills within the three FMS domains. We have previously demonstrated good inter-rater reliability for this FMS battery (Nilsen et al, 2019a).…”

“…In 2008, Stodden et al developed a conceptual model hypothesizing a primary connection between the level of PA and the quality of MC (Stodden et al, 2008). The findings of this seminal work have been confirmed by several subsequent research groups (Lai et al, 2014;Engel et al, 2018;Nilsen et al, 2020b;Xin et al, 2020). Goodway et al (2003) showed the positive effects of a 9-weeks integrative PA program (18 lessons, 35/min each) on the Test of Gross Motor Development (TGMD) scores in preschoolers compared to children who only carried out the regular kindergarten PA. Based on these results, the authors supported the idea of implementing PA in the kindergarten education program (Goodway et al, 2003).…”
