The Multiple Roles of Ascorbate in the Abiotic Stress Response of Plants: Antioxidant, Cofactor, and Regulator

Abstract: Ascorbate (ASC) plays a critical role in plant stress response. The antioxidant role of ASC has been well-studied, but there are still several confusing questions about the function of ASC in plant abiotic stress response. ASC can scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS) and should be helpful for plant stress tolerance. But in some cases, increasing ASC content impairs plant abiotic stress tolerance, whereas, inhibiting ASC synthesis or regeneration enhances plant stress tolerance. This confusing phenomenon indi… Show more

“…Enhanced MDHAR and DHAR activity was observed in different plant species when exposed to abiotic stress [139,165]. In Lycopersicum esculentum, the overexpression of MDAR enhances the tolerance ability for temperature stress [166].…”

“…An increase in the concentration of GSH has been found to provide tolerance against extremes of environmental conditions such as extreme temperature, water stress, salt stress, and heavy metals [99]. In N. tabacum, different chloroplast transformants with genes such as DHAR, GR, and GSH show varied antioxidant mechanisms and enhanced abiotic stress tolerance [166].…”

“…Ascorbate contributes to many signalling pathways and plays a critical role in maintaining plant redox homeostasis [ 4 ]. In plants, AsA regulates cell division and growth and is involved in in many other processes, such as flowering, senescence, and protection against environmental stresses [ 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 ]. AsA is essential for human health and is involved in many metabolic processes in the body: it protects from cancer, stimulates the immune system, and has many other important effects [ 9 ].…”

“…It is also involved in apical meristem formation, development of root architecture, regulation of flowering time and leaf senescence. Recent reports also postulated its participation in epigenetic regulation (review in [11]).…”
