This chapter explores language education in translation and interpreting (TI) programs through the lens of linguistic multi-competence. In doing so, language learning and teaching in the multilingual foreign language classroom are considered as a multisensory, multimodal, multidirectional, and multidimensional adaptation process and an acculturation process with emphasis on the students’ agency. The purpose of this chapter is to stress the importance of addressing and pedagogically adopting new linguistic concepts such as translanguaging or translinguistics in translator and interpreter training. New developments in the discipline of modern translation studies (TS) which reconfigure and redefine the field by adopting a cross-disciplinary perspective lend themselves well to blending with critical, empowering plurilingual pedagogies in higher education.

This chapter focuses on the multilingual and multicultural classroom in the privileged context of study abroad. In such an international classroom, exchange students from diverse academic, linguistic, and cultural backgrounds meet and interact for a limited period of time. However, too often, the interplay between privilege and responsibility is not adequately addressed, and the study abroad context misses the chance of educational justice-oriented work. The purpose of this chapter is to link social justice education with intercultural communicative competence as well as with culturally and emotionally responsive teaching practices.

This chapter focuses on the topic of language teacher identity within a specific field of language learning and teaching. TILLT is the acronym of this field and it stands for Translation and Interpreting-oriented Language Learning and Teaching. In order to give an overview of this particular higher education context the chapter starts with a discussion of TILLT, followed by recent developments and major contributions. The main focus of this chapter, however, is to offer a conceptualization of TILLT teacher identity, while, at the same time, acknowledging the students' identity issues as future translators and interpreters. The chapter concludes with some recommendations for future research directions in this promising emerging academic field.
