The Multifaceted Effects of Polysaccharides Isolated from Dendrobium huoshanense on Immune Functions with the Induction of Interleukin-1 Receptor Antagonist (IL-1ra) in Monocytes

Abstract: Dendrobium huoshanense is a valuable and versatile Chinese herbal medicine with the anecdotal claims of cancer prevention and anti-inflammation. However, its immunological activities are limited to in vitro studies on a few cytokines and immune cell functions. First, we investigated the effects of polysaccharides isolated from DH (DH-PS) on inducing a panel of cytokines/chemokines in mice in vivo and human in vitro. We found that DH polysaccharides (DH-PS) induced TH1, TH2, inflammatory cytokines and chemokine… Show more

“…Interestingly, the total polysaccharides of D. huoshanense induced the expression of interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1ra) in human monocytes. Which the IL-1ra was regulated by 37 a series of signaling pathways, like ERK/ELK, p38 MAPK, PI3K, and NF- κ B [ 83 ].…”

“…DHP-4A consists of glucose, arabinose, mannose and rhamnose with a molar ratio of 13.8:3.0:6.1:2.1 [ 91 ]. Lin et al (2014) showed that D. huoshanense polysaccharides (DH-PS) induced a Th1, Th2, inflammatory cytokines and chemokines in mice in vivo and human in vitro [ 92 ]. DH-PS expanded mouse splenocytes in vivo including CD4 + T cells, CD8 + T cells, B cells, NK cells, NKT cells, monocytes/macrophages, granulocytes and regulatory T cells.…”

“…Now, D. huoshanense is known as national first-level protected plant and Chinese National Geographic Indication product, and it was officially included in the 2020 edition of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia. D. huoshanense has a variety of pharmacological effects such as anti-oxidation activity, liver protection, immunomodulatory activity, anti-cataract activity, promotion of saliva production and building of immunity [8][9][10][11]. Due to their unique habitat, the slow growth rate and over-harvesting, D. huoshanense is on the verge of extinction and expensive.…”
