“…Superficial studies of the mouth-parts of Empididae have been made by Peterson (1916) and others, but no attempt was made to discover morphological adaptations to the known predatory feeding habits. This investigation provided the opportunity of making comparisons with the mouth-parts of species of the families Cordyluridae (Bletchly, 1953) and Tacliinidae (Graham-Smith, 1930), and, for this reason, a similar terminology has been employed in this paper. owing to the difficulties encountered in describing markedly opisthognathous mouth-parts, the terms " dorsal " and " ventral " have been used on occasion in place of the more strictly accurate anterior and posterior, to facilitate explanation of some of the drawings.…”
