The motivic nearby fiber and degeneration of stable rationality

Abstract: We use the motivic obstruction to stable rationality introduced by Shinder and the first-named author to establish several new classes of stably irrational hypersurfaces and complete intersections. An important new ingredient is the use of tropical degeneration techniques.Notations. We denote by k an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, and by K the field of Puiseux series over k, that is, ].Moreover, there exists a unique ring homomorphismsuch that the following square commutes:Thus, for every s… Show more

“…This paper is inspired by the discovery by Larsen and Lunts [LL03] of a remarkable connection between motivic integration and stable rationality and by the recent development of these ideas by Nicaise and Shinder [NS17], who proved that stable rationality is preserved under specializations in smooth families. Our goal here is to simplify and strengthen their arguments, leading to the following: Theorem 1.…”

“…B] (Chow functors in case char(k) > 0 [34, §3]) shows that the k-points whose fibers admit a Chow decomposition of the diagonal occupy a countable union of closed subsets of B. An alternative approach, bypassing Chow groups, appears in recent work [54], [40]. We return to Theorem 1.4, with char(k) = 2, 3, and smooth degree 2 del Pezzo surface S.…”

“…A new ingredient is a variant of the standard elementary transformation of vector bundles. This is needed to apply the specialization method, which was introduced by Voisin [15] and developed further in [6], [14], [11] and which tells us that in a family where one (mildly singular) member has an obstruction to stable rationality, the very general member fails to be stably rational. In our case, the family is a family of Brauer-Severi surface bundles, where one member has nontrivial 3-torsion in its unramified Brauer group.…”
