The Most Common Type, Severity, and Expected Frequency of Injuries Vary by Defensive Position in Professional Baseball Players

Abstract: Background: Location, frequency, and severity of in-game injuries by defensive position played have never been determined in professional baseball players. Hypothesis: Catchers would have a higher frequency of hip and knee injuries; infielders and outfielders would have a higher frequency of general lower extremity injuries; and pitchers would have a higher frequency and severity of shoulder and elbow/forearm injuries. Study Design: Descriptive epidemiology study. Methods: The Major League Baseball Health and … Show more

“…Injuries to the upper extremity in baseball pitchers continue to rise across all levels of play. [1][2][3][4] Many shoulder and elbow injuries -such as injuries to the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL), rotator cuff, and glenohumeral capsulolabral complex -often require surgical intervention and an extensive period of rehabilitation. As pitchers prepare to return to competition after these injuries, interval throwing programs (ITP) are used to progressively apply load to the healing tissue.…”

“…This movement also makes the player vulnerable to SLAP tears, particularly SLAP II tears, as well as rotator cuff pathology, which is the most common upper extremity injury across all positions. 58,59 Any baseball player may experience a SLAP tear, but pitchers are particularly susceptible to such injuries and have been seen to be younger, demonstrate lower rates of return to preinjury performance, and are more predisposed to season-ending injuries (►Fig. 8).…”

“…Despite continued improvements in the understanding of the overhead throwing motion, injuries to the upper extremities of baseball pitchers continue to rise across all levels of play. [1][2][3][4] Efforts to return pitchers to their pre-injury level of performance remains a critical, yet challenging task for sports medicine physicians, physical therapists, athletic trainers, and other rehabilitation specialists. Successful rehabilitation of baseball pitchers relies on a gradual building of strength, flexibility, and endurance to meet the demands of competition.…”
