The Most Basic Selection Criteria for Improving Yield and Quality of Upland Cotton

Abstract: Increase in productivity and selection procedures chiefly depend upon genetic control of yield related traits, combining ability of the genotypes for concerned characters and association of these parameters among themselves and with the final yield. Single and three way crosses in cotton were analyzed for genetic behavior, combining ability, heterosis and correlation of various traits related to boll (synonymously known as withinboll yield traits) and fibre quality. The experiments were carried out at the Depa… Show more

“…Additive and non-additive gene action for inheritance of various traits will be governed by general combining ability and specific combining ability respectively (Griffing, 1956, Sprague andTatum, 1942). Thus the SCA is important for hybrid crop exploitation and GCA is practicable for hybridization and selection programmes (Ali et al 2016 andJatoi et al 2011). The present study was conducted to estimate the gca effects of parents and sca effects of their crosses for identification of parents/crosses possessing compact plant type characteristics along with medium to high yield and desirable quality parameters that make them amenable for HDPS.…”
