The mortality of Oryzaephilus surinamensis Linnaeus, 1758 (Coleoptera: Silvanidae) induced by powdered plants

Abstract: Abstract:The aim of this study was to investigate whether powdered plants of different species namely: peppermint Mentha piperita (L.) (Lamiaceae), wormwood Artemisia absinthium (L.) (Asteraceae), common sage Salvia officinalis (L.) (Lamiaceae), allspice Pimenta dioica (Linnaeus et Merrill) (Myrtaceae) and common garlic Allium sativum (L.) (Amaryllidaceae), added to semolina using concentrations of 1.23, 3.61, and 5.88%, influence the mortality rate in the saw-toothed grain beetle Oryzaephilus surinamensis Lin… Show more

“…The essential oils of H. suaveolens leaves [98], C. maritimum [83] and Artemisia herba-alba and Artemisia absinthium caused necrosis to adults [56]. Powdered Salvia officinalis also caused a high mortality rate, reaching 80% (the powdered plant was added to culture containers at concentrations of 5.88%) [47]. Finally, Pongamia pinnata has the potential for use as a mediocre repellent [68].…”

“…Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L.) (Coleoptera: Silvanidae), the sawtoothed grain beetle, is an important cosmopolitan pest of various stored products and storage habitats, including mills, fodder storages, retail distribution centers, and retail stores (Sinha and Watters 1985, Trematerra and Sciarretta 2004, Laszczak-Dawid et al 2008, Kłyś and Przystupińska 2015). This insect species is characterized by high mobility, nonexcessive feeding, and short developmental time (Arthur 2001, Kłyś and Przystupińska 2015).…”

This insect species is characterized by high mobility, nonexcessive feeding, and short developmental time (Arthur 2001, Kłyś and Przystupińska 2015). The small size, the preferences to infest the bottom layers of the cereal bulk, and to lay eggs in crevices and cracks of stored facilities are some of the characteristics of this species that make its detection and therefore its control with contact insecticides difficult (Arthur 2001, Hill 2003, Mahroof and Hagstrum 2012).…”
