The Morphologicaland Morphometric Study of Suprascapular Notch and Its Variations

Abstract: The Suprascapular notch is situated in the lateral part of the superior border of the scapula, just adjacent to the base of Coracoid process. The notch is bridged by the superior transverse scapular ligament (STSL) which some time ossifies and is attached laterally to the root of the coracoid process and medially to the limit of the notch. A number of variations occur in the shape of suprascapular notch, from a discrete notch to "J" shaped, "V" shaped, "U" shaped or "O" shaped (i.e. as a complete foramen). To … Show more

“…The incidence of complete absence of suprascapular notch in our study is almost similar studies performed by Kour et al, Varghese et al, Mahato et al, Vaidya et al among Indian population though sample size as well as regional variation still present. (15,31,32,33) Apart from this, our observation for the incidence was almost similar with work done by Albino et al in Italian population but the sample size was very high in their case. (30) Similar results for the incidence were seen in studied performed by Natsis et al & Polgus et al among population of Greek & Poland.…”

“…The study of dimensions of the suprascapular notch can provide with a guide way for landmark for suprascapular nerve block and to correlate suprascapular nerve entrapment syndrome [10,11]. Variations in the morphology of suprascapular notch have been identified as one of the causes of suprascapular nerve neuropathy by suprascapular nerve entrapment [2, 6,11,14,16]. Morphometric measurements of suprascapular notch give us a better understanding of predisposing factors which cause compression of the suprascapular nerve.…”
