This study presents selective moral disengagement (Bandura 1986, 2002, 2015) as a paradigm for analyzing extremist marketing messages and for developing effective counter-messages. Selective moral disengagement explicates eight mechanisms common to extremist media content that can influence seemingly ordinary people to support and commit atrocities. Through a qualitative content analysis, the author investigates the use of moral disengagement mechanisms in an online propaganda magazine ( Rumiyah) of the so-called Islamic State (IS) terrorist organization. This work demonstrates the extensive use of the eight moral disengagement mechanisms throughout a variety of genres of IS propaganda articles. Additionally, a ninth moral disengagement strategy—humanization of perpetrators—emerged. The analysis reveals internal inconsistencies in IS’ approach to moral disengagement. The author argues that careful consideration of the use of these mechanisms in IS propaganda clarifies the understanding of IS’ marketing strategy and informs counter-messaging efforts. Specific counter-messaging approaches are proposed for combatting IS given these findings. Further, a roadmap is given for extending the selective moral disengagement analysis paradigm into other extremist marketing contexts, including U.S. domestic terrorism.

Life skills are essential among students in countering the circumstances of life. However, due to the shifting instructional modality, their skills acquisition was compromised. Thus, this study aims to analyze the life skills of Filipino emerging adults in terms of self-awareness, empathy, effective communication, interpersonal relations, creative thinking, critical thinking, decision-making, problem-solving, coping with emotions, and coping with stress. Likewise, it determined the relationship between the demographics and life skills. Lastly, it investigated what demographics predict their life skills. This study using a quantitative design, a standardized questionnaire was responded by 298 college students. In data analysis, mean and standard deviation were utilized in analyzing the students’ level of life skills. The result reveals that the life skill was rated average which signifies the need for improvement. The lowest areas were coping with stress, coping with emotions, effective communication, and interpersonal relationship. Meanwhile, their family income, family structure, and academic classification were found no correlation with life skills. However, the degree program was significantly related. Lastly, the degree program was found to be a life skill predictor. Hence, continuous improvement is critical in their life skill acquisition and the school plays a potential role in advancing this.

In response to the increase in ideological and non‐ideological mass killings, mental health professionals are beginning to invest in prevention and intervention in violent radicalization situations. The psychological and psychiatric literature proposes multiple psychological theories describing the individual factors at play in the process of violent radicalization: loss of meaning, responses to humiliation, dehumanization of the other as well as serious identity problems are often mentioned, but little is known about the self‐representation of individuals attracted or involved in violent radicalization. This qualitative study aims at giving a sense of the complexity and texture of the experience of radicalized youth (18–30 years old), followed by a specialized clinic in Quebec (Canada). Ten patients, 18–30 years old, a significant age group for identity formation, were recruited for the study. An art‐based method (self‐portrait with a collage) and a projective testing method (the Thematic Apperception Test) were used to elicit the psychic representations of the patient about their identity and document their time perception. The results show that idealization and devaluation processes are central to these patients' self‐representation and are associated with adverse childhood experiences. Regarding time perception, many participants were spontaneously drawn toward a nostalgic past, manifesting significant difficulties in anchoring themselves in the present and imagining a future. These results confirm the vulnerability of this clientele and show that the projective art‐based methods are perceived as more soothing than threatening. Clinical implications, tools and approaches to help evaluate and intervene with radicalized youth are discussed.
