The Monogenean Parasite Fauna of Cichlids: A Potential Tool for Host Biogeography

Abstract: We discuss geographical distribution and phylogeny of Dactylogyridea (Monogenea) parasitizing Cichlidae to elucidate their hosts' history. Although mesoparasitic Monogenea (Enterogyrus spp.) show typical vicariant distribution, ectoparasitic representatives from different continents are not considered sister taxa, hence their distribution cannot result from vicariance alone. Because of the close host-parasite relationship, this might indicate that present-day cichlid distribution may also reflect dispersal thr… Show more

“…Endoparasites are generally ingested by their host in a passive manner, which may lead to low specificity. In contrast, ectoparasites generally infect their host through active dispersal (Pariselle et al. 2011), allowing them to be more specific in their host choices.…”

“…In each of the African Great Lakes, hundreds of endemic species evolved within a short period of time3132333435. Currently, 13 monogenean genera are known to infect cichlid species and six of these have been observed on African representatives36. Cichlidogyrus (Monopisthocotylea, Dactylogyridae) is the most species rich, with 102 representatives recorded from 88 different host species10111213141518373839404142.…”

“…Variations in parasite species richness among Cichlidae species provide a good model for studying diversification of communities among these hosts, as well as contributing towards knowledge of the biogeography of parasites of these Perciformes, which have a wide geographical distribution and endemic characteristics (Pérez‐Ponce de León and Choudhury, ; Pariselle et al., ). In addition, whenever a wild Amazonian cichlid species is translocated to another region, there is always the possibility that its parasites will also be translocated with it (Bittencourt et al., ).…”
