Epoxides are important industrial intermediates applied in a variety of industrial processes. During the production of epoxides, catalysts have played an irreplaceable and unique role. In this review, the historic progress of molybdenum-based catalysts in alkene epoxidation are covered and an outlook on future challenge discussed. Efficient catalysts are demonstrated including soluble molybdenum complexes, polyoxometalates catalysts, molybdenum-containing metal organic frameworks, silica supported molybdenum-based catalysts, polymer supported molybdenum-based catalysts, magnetic molybdenum-based catalysts, hierarchical molybdenum-based catalysts, graphene-based molybdenum containing catalysts, photocatalyzed epoxidation catalysts, and some other systems. The effects of different solvents and oxidants are discussed and the mechanisms of epoxidation are summarized. The challenges and perspectives to further enhance the catalytic performances in alkenes epoxidation are presented.

MoO3 and WO3 were supported on γ-Al2O3 and SiO2 with nominal loadings of 10 wt % via wet impregnation. The catalysts were characterized using XRD, TPR, Pulse TPD, Raman, TEM, and BET surface area. The alumina supported catalysts were found to contain higher Brønsted acidity compared to those supported on silica. These catalysts were evaluated in the hydrogenolysis of glycerol in a continuous flow fixed bed reactor in a temperature range of 250−325 °C and a H2 pressure of 60 bar. All catalysts were active, with activity increasing with temperature as well as Brønsted acidity. The selectivity to ethylene glycol and 1,2-propanediol decreased with increase in temperature. In parallel, the selectivity to lower alcohols such as methanol, ethanol, 2-propanol, and 1-propanol increased with temperature as the ethylene glycol and 1,2propanediol reacted further to these products due to C−C bond cleavage. The total selectivity to lower alcohols was 34.6, 64.8, 70.6, and 54.6% over Mo/Al2O3, Mo/SiO2, W/Al2O3, and W/SiO2 respectively. The total selectivity to lower alcohols increased to 73.6, 72.8, 85.3, and 66.1% over Mo/Al2O3, Mo/SiO2, W/Al2O3, and W/SiO2 respectively when the H2:glycerol ratio was doubled.

MoO3‐Bi2SiO5/SiO2 catalysts with a Mo/Bi molar ratio of 5, prepared by a two‐step hydrothermal and simple impregnation method, were investigated for the epoxidation of propylene by O2 and characterized by XRD, N2 absorption–desorption isotherms, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), temperature‐programmed reduction, NH3 temperature‐programmed desorption (TPD), and IR, Raman, and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). On MoO3‐Bi2SiO5/SiO2 with Mo/Bi=5 calcined at 723 K, a propylene conversion of 21.99 % and a propylene oxide selectivity of 55.14 % were obtained at 0.15 MPa, 673 K, and flow rates of C3H6/O2/N2=1/4/20 cm3 min−1. XRD, IR spectroscopy, and XPS results show that Bi2SiO5 and MoO3 are crystalline nanoparticles. NH3‐TPD results indicate that the surface acid sites are necessary for the high catalytic activity. The results of TGA and N2 absorption–desorption isotherms reveal that a reasonable calcination temperature is 723 K. The reaction mechanism of propylene epoxidation on MoO3‐Bi2SiO5/SiO2 catalysis is hypothesized to involve an allylic radical generated at the molybdenum oxide species and the activation of O2 at the bismuth oxide cations.
