The Molecular Composition of Hydrophilic Sulfur Sols Prepared by Acid Decomposition of Thiosulfate [1]

Abstract: Hydrophilic sulfur sols prepared from sodium thiosulfate and concentrated sulfuric acid and purified by repeated NaCl precipitation and peptization in water have been studied by chemical analysis, vibrational spectroscopy, ion-pair chromatography and reversed-phase HPLC. The composition of the sol is Na1.64S28.6O6 · 5.9/n Sn · 1.0 NaCl. The elemental sulfur Sn (n = 6-14; mainly S 8 Show more

“…The pattern of rapid S 0 globule nucleation, followed by growth but no new visible globule production, can be explained by aggregation and Ostwald particle ripening. S 8 rings can quickly aggregate into very small condensed forms of sulfur (Steudel et al, 1988;Steudel, 1996Steudel, , 2003, with a critical nucleus size as low as 30 nm (Chaudhuri & Paria, 2010). Attraction between these clusters causes further aggregation (Garcia & Druschel, 2014).…”

“…Central to the pathways leading to S storage mechanisms, are microbially catalyzed reactions involving either the acid-consuming disproportionation of S 2 O 3 2À , or the hydrolysis of S 4 O 6 2À at low pH, to polysulfane monosulfonic acids ðHS n SO 3 À Þ, which may then be further processed to yield polythionates (Steudel et al, 1987;Steudel et al, 1988;Pronk et al, 1990;Steudel, 2003). The generation of these species accounts for the pool of ''Other S species'' as determined by mass balance calculations, and is entirely consistent with the H + consumption observed (Fig.…”

“…Therefore, the concentration of elemental sulphur, which consists mainly of cyclic octamers (S,; Steudel et al 1987Steudel et al , 1988, was analysed according to Lauren & Watkinson (1985). The tissues were deep frozen and ground in liquid nitrogen, homogenized in 200 p1 ice-cold chloroform, and shaken RESULTS for 20 h at -0°C.…”
