We performed a detailed analysis of hydrothermal quartz at the Mokrsko gold deposit (Čelina, Mokrsko-East, and Mokrsko-West deposits). Twenty-one samples were studied by scanning electron microscopy cathodoluminescence (CL) imagining, CL emission spectra and trace elements were measured on six selected samples. Four quartz growth generations Q1 to Q4 were described. Homogeneous early blue CL Q1 with initial emission spectra at 380 and 500 nm was observed at the Čelina deposit with typical titanium concentrations in the range of 20–50 ppm. Hydrothermal quartz at Mokrsko-West, which also includes early Q1, late subhedral faces of yellow CL Q2, and microfissures of greenish CL Q3 (both 570 nm), is characterized by titanium depletion. The titanium concentration is comparable to previous studies of crystallization temperatures proving titanium concentration in quartz as a good geothermal indicator. Q4, developed in microfissures only at Čelina, has no visual CL effect. Mokrsko-West is specific in comparison to Mokrsko-East and Čelina by germanium enrichments in hydrothermal quartz (up to 17 ppm) and the presence of fluorite. Tectonic (sheeted veinlets system, regional tectonic setting) and geochemical (germanium in quartz, the presence of fluorite) characteristics of the quartz veins link the late mineralization stages at the Mokrsko-West deposit to the temporally related Blatná intrusive suite.

The formation of the Central European and Tarim Large Igneous Provinces (LIPs) in the Early Permian coincided with the demise of the Variscan and the Southern Tianshan orogens, respectively. The Early Triassic Siberian LIP was formed in the wake of the Western Altaid orogeny in the Late Permian. These processes coincided with the development of the majority of known Late Palaeozoic and Early Mesozoic hydrothermal and magmatic ore deposits in the corresponding orogenic domains. Nickel-copper(-PGE) deposits followed directly from the evolution of the (ultra-)mafi c melts which make up the LIPs. In Western Siberia, the diverse assemblage of associated noble and base metals in the Noril'sk-Talnakh Ni-Cu(-PGE) deposits suggests these metals also had their source in the mantle domain from which the (ultra-)mafi c melts were generated. The same metals variably found their way into the hydrothermal ore deposits in the defunct Variscan and Southern Tianshan orogenic domains. These ore deposits have traditionally been viewed as a result of orogenic processes. However, their ages, together with the timing and nature of their by then intracontinental tectonic control cause uncertainty concerning the role of the orogens. In view of their mantle sources in their association with the Siberian LIP, the mantle contribution to these Late Palaeozoic hydrothermal ore deposits in the orogenic belts may have been more signifi cant than previously thought. An orogenic contribution to melting of mantle complexes and to mineralisation may have resided in the earlier modification of subcontinental mantle domains by subduction of oceanic lithosphere. In all three cases, the controlling tectonic setting of orogenic cessation, LIP formation and mineralisation was dominated by translithospheric strikeslip deformation, possibly in combination with orogenic collapse and lithosphere delamination. In view of their recurrence, the orogen-lip sequences were probably not fortuitous. The controlling strike-slip faults were principal elements of the lithosphere-scale dynamic framework that led to the amalgamation of Pangaea. At this scale, the exceptionally large volume of the Siberian LIP may, in addition to the strike-slip dissection of the lithosphere, have been related to extension in the continental lithosphere of the margin of the Supercontinent (cf. Gutiérrez-Alonso et al. 2008). The peripheral extension was associated with compression in its centre. The explanation of these Large Igneous Provinces does not require the concept of an active mantle plume because deep-reaching strike-slip deformation, orogenic collapse and lithosphere delamination involved in the destruction of the orogenic edifi ces can have caused decompression melting in large domains of the subcontinental mantle.

Reduced intrusion-related gold systems are generally characterized by a Au-BiTe -W metal assemblage genetically linked to the emplacement of granitoids. The Palea Kavala ore system, Greece, consists of ~150 minor Fe-Mn (Pb±Zn±Ag), Fe-Mn-Au, Fe-As-Au, Fe-Cu-Au, and BiTe -Au ore occurrences that occur primarily in quartz-calcite-sulfide veins (hypogene mineralization), or as supergene bodies, in overlapping zones centered on the ~21-22 Ma granodioritic Kavala pluton, which intrudes metamorphic rocks of the Paleozoic Rhodope metamorphic core complex. The pluton consists mostly of granodiorite with lesser amounts of diorite, tonalite and monzodiorite, which was emplaced along the regional E-W trending Kavala-Komotini fault. The recently discovered, ~4 km long, E-W trending so-called Kavala vein is a sheeted quartz vein system of BiTe -Pb-Sb±Au mineralization that crosscuts the Kavala pluton and the schists and gneisses of the Rhodope Massif. The Kavala vein system is comprised of quartz with lesser amounts of K-feldspar, plagioclase, and muscovite. Quartz-sericite-pyrite alteration is pervasive but minor kaolinite is also present. Pyrite (~5% of vein volume) contains inclusions of tetradymite (some gold-bearing), bismuthinite, and cosalite. Sulfur isotope values (n = 27) of pyrite from the Kavala and Chalkero veins, as well as pyrite and 5 galena from Garizo Hill Fe-Mn-Pb vein range from-1.9 to 1.0 per mil (with one outlier of-4.6 per mil) and suggest a magmatic sulfur source. Homogenization temperatures (T h) of type I (two-phase aqueous liquid-vapor) and type II (three-phase, H 2 O-CO 2-rich) fluid inclusions that homogenize into the liquid phase in quartz from the Kavala and Chalkero veins range from 216.0º to 420.0ºC (n = 216) and 255.7 º to 414.0 ºC (n = 112), respectively. The T h of type III (two-phase aqueous liquid-vapor), which homogenize into the vapor phase, ranges from 210.4 o to 323.4 o C (n = 28). The salinities of type I and type II inclusions range from 15.9 to 22.6 wt. % NaCl equiv. and 5.5 to 11.2 wt. % NaCl equiv., respectively. Eutectic temperatures of-58.5 o to-44.3 o C for type I inclusions suggest the presence of appreciable CaCl 2 in addition to NaCl. Clathrate melting temperatures for type II inclusions of ~-56.7 o C indicate that CO 2 is the major component of the gaseous phase. The presence of a zoned metallogenetic district centered on BiTe -Pb-Sb±Au mineralization within the Kavala pluton and the two high-temperature, high-salinity, immiscible carbonic and aqueous fluids associated with the Kavala and Chalkero veins are consistent with them being part of a reduced intrusion-related gold system.
