The modified Si-Jun-Zi Decoction attenuates colon cancer liver metastasis by increasing macrophage cells

Abstract: Background The modified Si-Jun-Zi Decoction (SJZ), a Chinese medicine formula, is clinically used against multiple malignancies including colorectal cancer (CRC). This study aims to evaluate the effect of modified SJZ on CRC liver metastasis and identify the therapeutic mechanisms. Methods Human CRC cells with GFP fluorescence were transplanted into Balb/c nude mice spleens. Modified SJZ, 5-fluorouracil or the combined treatment was given for 3 weeks. CRC liver metastas… Show more

“…reversal effect on both weight loss and the severity (or onset) of the diarrhea status (Figures 3 and 4). Si-Jun-Zi-Tang is a traditional herbal formula that is used in gastroenterology and is also frequently utilized as a complementary agent for oncologic treatment due to its multiple roles in preventing tumor recurrence and metastasis and improving the quality of life (Lu et al, 2018;Zhou et al, 2019). Although there might be specific differences between human and rodents, we speculate that Si-Jun-Zi-Tang might compensate for the deficiencies of Lglutamine in addressing the physical manifestations of intestinal mucositis following anticancer drug treatment considering its multiple components and multiple targeted effects and the clinical practice, which possibly resulted in the higher efficacy of G-SJZ in the current study.…”

“…TCM has unique advantages in treating cancers because of its comprehensive pharmacological effects of multi-channel, multi-levels, and multi-targets. For example, Chinese medicine formula Tian Xian Liquid, inhibits tumor growth effectively [6] and also enhances immunity by promoting macrophages proliferation [7].…”

“…In addition, the anticarcinogenic effect of several traditional Chinese medicines has also been emphasized in colon cancer ( 7 , 8 ). The authors' previous study demonstrated that modified Si-Jun-Zi Decoction (SJZ), a Chinese medicinal formula, could inhibit colon cancer liver metastasis by increasing the content of macrophage cells ( 9 ). A second Chinese medicine, acorus calamus, or its bioactive phytochemical β-asarone, has been widely reported to possess antitumor and chemopreventive activities in multiple carcinomas, including lung cancer ( 10 ), gastric cancer ( 11 ) and glioma ( 12 ).…”
