Context: Hypericin, isolated from Hypericum perforatum L. and about another 300 Hypericum species (Guttiferae), is one of the most powerful photosensitizers found in nature. Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the variability of chemical composition and biological activities of four H. perforatum samples, collected at different altitudes in the South Apennine of Italy. Materials and methods: MTT assay was used to evaluate the antiproliferative activity of different samples concentrations (0.6-100 mg/mL) after irradiation at 365 nm. The inhibition of nitric oxide production was evaluated after 24 h of incubation using the macrophage cell line RAW 264.7 and sample solutions ranging from 12.5 to 1000 mg/mL. Antioxidant activities were evaluated using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay and b-carotene bleaching test (ranges were 12.5-1000 and 1-400 mg/mL, respectively). Chemical composition was evaluated through HPTLC, and different contents of hypericin and rutin have been observed. Results: The most phototoxic sample was collected from Zumpano (no. 1 at 370 m), with IC 50 values of 24.61 AE 0.02 mg/mL. Sample no. 1 showed also the best radical scavenging activity (IC 50 value of 9.18 AE 0.03 mg/mL) and the best antioxidant activity (IC 50 value of 10.04 AE 0.03 mg/mL after 30 min of incubation). Best activity of extract no. 1 was well in accordance with chemical data, including the phenolic total content and particular metabolome profile. Discussion and conclusion: This paper confirms the usefulness in maintaining the exploration of H. perforatum activities, in order to confirm its potentiality as a multipurpose plant.

Utilization of natural products is radically changing. Changes were mainly due to the outcome in the market of a plethora of new food supplements, and in particular those generally named botanicals for their common plant origin. The validation of these novel products needs powerful analytical devices tailored for the study of herbal extracts in order to assess composition and face their natural complexity as a resource. The last item is important and crucial for the capacity and utility of the analytical results that means that each product should be analyzed with the right approach. Having in mind these arguments, we selected HPTLC as useful tool for the analysis of products based on plant staminal (stem) cells. Nowadays these products, generally named bud-derivatives, are waiting scientific validation to obtain their own place into food supplements regulation, after gained that in the market. Our analyses, based on HPTLC fingerprints, were able to show bud-derivatives complex compositions that resulted very similar, but also in part different, to those of the corresponding leaf hydro-alcoholic extract.

Background: Fall armyworm (FAW) Spodoptera frugiperda (Noctuidae: Lepidoptera) is native of America is now considered as invading pest in India. It causes damage to maize, wheat, rice, sugarcane, etc. The aim of this study was evaluation of neem oil in combination with wetting agent (SuperStiker) as larvicide against Spodoptera frugiperda (Noctuidae: Lepidoptera). Methods: The present study was conducted to evaluate the larvicidal effect of neem oil (WA391: Nim Q) with combination of wetting agents (WA306: SuperStiker). Topical application of different combination of Neem Oil and SuperStiker along with control was given to selected days (2, 4, 6 and 12 days) larvae. Results: The result revealed that the highest mortality percentage was recorded with the combination of 2 ml Neem oil + 5 ml of SuperStiker in all selected larvae after 24 hours of exposure. Conclusion: Hence use of Nim Q and SuperStiker in combination was most effective for control FAW population. Therefore, this kind of study will motivate the use of more ecofriendly, less toxic control measuresto decrease the FAW population in agriculture field.
