Estimation of soil erosion and sediment yield concentration across the Kolleru Lake catchment using GIS

Flat lakes with a large catchment area are especially affected by sediment inputs. The Kolleru Lake catchment (south-eastern India) with a surface area of approximately 6121 km2 belongs to such types of lake basins. The study’s main objective was the assessment of both soil erosion and sediment yield concentration rate of the Kolleru catchment. The study was conducted using the revised universal soil loss equation (RUSLE) model due to its simple and good applicability for soil erosion estimation. Data such as rainfall, soil texture, topography, crop cover management, and support practice factor were integrated into the modeling using RUSLE and ArcGIS. Field data were used both to analyze the soil texture and the slope length factor. The results showed that average annual soil loss was estimated with 13.6 t/ha/year, classifying the Kolleru Lake Basin under a very high erosion rate category. About 38% of the catchment area has encountered slight soil loss. Areas covered with moderate, strong, severe, very severe erosion potential zones are 29%, 17%, 9%, and 5.5%, respectively. This study identified that upland areas with less vegetation cover exported high potential erosion rates. Unlike the soil loss, the sediment delivery ratio values for the catchment were not affected by land use, while it showed a strong relationship with the catchment drainage system. Whereas, the average annual sediment yield was determined with 7.61 t/ha/year, had identified with the same pattern of the soil erosion. Catchment topography, vegetation, drainage system, soil properties, and land use cover played a major role in exporting the highest sedimentation. The outcome of these studies can be used among others to identify critical erosion areas on a pixel basis for the planning of erosion management practices.

Aiming to detect possible impacts of human activities on the characteristics of the sediments of the Urías lagoon, which is a lagoonal system surrounded by the urban area of Mazatlán (NW Mexico), we determined the mean percentages of the main particle fractions, pH, CO3 2-, organic carbon and total arsenic content in the surficial sediments of six different zones of the Urías lagoon. Sand was the dominant size fraction throughout the whole system. The highest organic matter and the lowest pH values were found in adjacent sites to industrial activities, especially to fish processing. Most arsenic concentrations were within the values of the natural local background (12.6-27.3 mg/kg), with the possible exception of sediments close to the industrial area, especially those nearby the fish processing plants, where the mean As (45.2 ± 9.3 mg/kg) exceeded the level which may have adverse effects on marine organisms (41.6 mg/kg). However, it is not excluded that such levels are results rather from the combined effect of the hydrodynamic and sediments dynamic of sediment associated to local enrichments background of the region. Numerical and experimental studies on dynamic gas emission characteristics of boreholes

The gas emission rate of boreholes is one of the most important indices for coal and gas outburst prediction. In this work, instantaneous gas emission velocity and environmental effects on borehole gas emission were studied. Through theoretical analysis, the mechanism of crack propagation in the coal borehole was clarified, and the effect of soft and hard coal on gas desorption and gas emission. The results of numerical simulations also indicated that the initial gas emission has a function relationship to the drilling distance and the physical characteristics of the coal seam. A novel dynamic testing technology was proposed to obtain gas emission velocity. Laboratory experiments under adsorption and desorption of CO2 and N2 were performed using coal samples from Xuehu, Fenghui, Weishe, and Wuzhong coal mines. The data of initial gas emission under different coal samples were recorded, and the fitting curves were obtained. The results show a positive correlation between initial gas emission and drilling depth. However, abnormal would occur when the drill pipe enters the soft stratification, and the maximum value of the initial gas emission of the abnormal part is 3.8 times the normal value, which indicates a high degree of sensibility to soft stratification. The results were revealed the dynamic gas emission law of boreholes.
