The Mission Planning System for the Firebird Spacecraft Constellation

Abstract: The Firebird mission comprises the two spacecraft TET (launched July 22 nd 2012) and BIROS (launch foreseen for May 25 th 2016), both carrying a combined infrared-optical camera system as primary payload as well as several additional hard-and software experiments. Our Mission Planning team at the German Space Operations Center (GSOC) is responsible for generating conflict-free timelines for commanding payload and so-called background sequence operations for both spacecraft in accordance with all given spacecra… Show more

“…Furthermore, PINTA can be easily combined with the other components and libraries of the GSOC mission planning tool suite, such as the timeline web viewer TimOnWeb, the planning library PLATO, the event-calculation library SCOTA, or the so-called "Swath Preview and Ordering Tool" (SPOT) [7]. Of course, that is just as important as the well-established integration with the other GSOC sub-systems, such as flight dynamics, satellite and ground station monitoring and control, via generic interfaces.…”

“…Furthermore, there are numerous other corresponding plug-ins with very specific functionalities for the various mission planning systems. The only examples to be mentioned at this point are those for the FireBird mission, without going into too much detail: the "PlanningRequestImporter", the "DatatakeInfoFileGenerator" and the "EnvelopeRequestImporter" [7].…”

“…The experience and heritage within the ground segment could be considered in an early stage of the C&DH software design. The efficiency of data storage and retrieval for example will profit from the mission planning tools at GSOC in use for the Firebird mission (see [11]). Therefore, Service 11 and Service 15 of the ECSS Packet Utilisation Standard (PUS) were implemented in the C&DH software.…”

“…3. Notice that both Plato and PINTA are tools developed at GSOC for spacecraft mission planning purposes, i. e. they are commonly used for planning onboard activities of spacecraft [26] as well as related onground activities [16].…”
