Intraoral splints are a commonly used dental treatment for a variety of conditions. Because such splints alter the condyle-disc-fossa relationship, they probably change the loading status of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), including the TMJ disc. Collagen, a major constituent of the disc, acts to resist tensile loading, and it is presumed that the fiber orientations of the individual disc bands reflect their functional loading. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine effects of intraoral splint wear on TMJ morphology in general, and collagen orientation of the intra-articular disc in particular. Young adult, female miniature pigs were divided into three groups: open-bite splint, protrusive-bite splint, and unsplinted control. Splints were worn for 2 months, after which the TMJ discs were harvested for histological examination and stereological analysis, and the skulls were cleaned. Although the splints had no effect on skull dimensions, changes were seen in the TMJs. The discs of the protrusively-splinted group showed an increased thickness of the posterior band (P Ͻ 0.015) and minor changes in collagen orientation of the anterior band. The most striking change was the presence of a degenerative osseous defect on the medial side of the mandibular condyle in half of the splinted animals. These results indicate that prolonged splint wear can induce remodeling and even injury of TMJ tissues. Additionally, splint wear must affect disc structure, as indicated by studies showing changes in shape (Ferrari and Herring, 1995) and glycosaminoglycan (GAG) content (Mao et al., 1998;Sindelar et al., 2000). However, detailed morphology has not previously been assessed.The TMJ disc is composed of approximately 80% water (Sindelar et al., 2000); the remaining 20% is mostly collagen. DEDICATÓRIA Resumo RESUMOO objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a taxa de sucesso, a quantidade de perda óssea em altura e a interação osso/implante para três diferentes protocolos: 1) implantes osseointegráveis mantidos sem carga durante período de reparo de 120 dias; 2) implantes submetidos a interferências oclusais; e 3) implantes que receberam carga imediata para ancoragem ortodôntica. Foram utilizados doze minipigs BR-1, nos quais foram instalados 70 implantes osseointegráveis de titânio (3,75mm diâmetro x 8,50mm comprimento), divididos em 5 grupos: Grupo 1 (n=12), implantes sem carga sepultados na mesial de caninos; Grupo 2 (n=6), implantes sem carga em áreas de extração; Grupo 3 (n=12), implantes expostos a interferências oclusais; Grupo 4 (n=20), implantes submetidos à carga ortodôntica imediata; Grupo 5 (n=20), implantes instalados em áreas de extração e submetidos à carga ortodôntica imediata. Ao término do período experimental, os animais foram eutanasiados e biópsias da região de interesse coletadas. Realizou-se avaliação clínica para estabelecer a porcentagem de sucesso (Teste Exato de Fisher), análise radiográfica para quantificar a perda óssea em altura (programa de análise de imagens KS300-Zeiss®, ANOVA) e análise histológica para descrever as características da interface osso/implante. A análise dos dados demonstrou: 1) Grupos 1, 2, 4 e 5 -taxa de sucesso, quantidade de perda óssea em altura e interação osso/implante semelhantes; 2) Grupo 3 -taxa de insucesso e quantidade de perda óssea significantemente maiores que os demais grupos, além de apresentar ausência de interação osso/implante. Os resultados clínicos, radiográficos e histológicos revelados nos grupos submetidos à carga ortodôntica imediata em relação aos grupos sem carga demonstraram que a perda óssea na região da crista óssea periimplantar é aceitável e não compromete a estabilidade clínica dos implantes.Desta forma, a utilização de carga imediata para ancoragem em Ortodontia não prejudica a posterior utilização desses implantes para a reabilitação protética, objetivo primário da indicação deste protocolo. Estudos clínicos prospectivos são necessários para comprovar estes dados. The eruption pattern of deciduous teeth in miniature swine

Since "miniature swine" are being used extensively as a research a dmal and since the literature concerning tooth eruption is not very precise, it has seemed advisable to observe and record tooth eruption in the "miniature swine" being used and to make comparisons with existing literature of domestic swine.A total of 55 pigs of the Pitman-Moore strain were observed weekly from birth until their dentition was complete at about 26 weeks. Lateral x-ray head plates and study models of both arches were made weekly for two members of the group. The study models and x-rays served for orientation and positive identification of teeth; and with the weekly observations constitute the data.Analysis of the data indicated there was no significant difference in the eruption time for any tooth due to the sex of the individual. A mean sequence of eruption for each arch was established for the group based on coefficients of concordance. There was no significant difference in sequence of eruption due to sex or litter.The eruption time and sequence noted for Pitman-Moore swine differed slightly from that recorded for domestic swine. The differences observed were slight and could be explained by the probably infrequent observations of domestic swine or small sample size.
