The mineralogy of paleosols in the Marília Formation and their importance in the environmental evolution of the Maastrichtian of the Bauru Basin in southeastern Brazil

Abstract: Soils and paleosols reflect the complex interplay between sedimentation, erosion and non-deposition. An analysis of the mineralogical components of paleosols is critical for the reconstitution of the factors, processes and environments in which they were formed. The recognition of mineralogical assemblages can reveal the environmental conditions during pedogenesis and through quantitative analysis it is possible to identify a vertical variation in mineral concentration or leaching over the paleosol profiles, i… Show more

“…Whilst previous studies of Bauru DFS palaeosols have been undertaken (e.g. Suguio et al ., ; Fernandes, ; Ladeira et al ., ; Dal'Bo et al., ; Fernandes, ; Pereira et al ., ; Silva et al ., ; Silva et al ., ; Nascimento et al ., Silva et al ., ,b,c), little is known about their lateral and vertical distributions or their stratigraphic meaning. Associated with the facies and architectural elements, palaeosol profiles with different degrees of evolution occur.…”

“…The formation of palygorskite and carbonatic horizons has been associated with arid to semi‐arid conditions (Goudie, ; Wright & Tucker, ; Abtahi & Khormali, ; Khormali et al ., ; Daoudi, ; Silva et al ., ,b,c), usually with rainfall amounts between 500 mm and 1000 mm (Wright & Tucker, ). The fact that palygorskite stands out in well‐developed Bt and Bk horizons is related to both its position in the landscape and good drainage.…”
