The Midwifery Workforce: ACNM 2012 and AMCB 2013 Core Data

Abstract: The new collaboration among HRSA, ACNM, and AMCB, represented as the Midwifery MasterFile, provides the opportunity to clearly profile CNMs/CMs, distinct from advanced practice registered nurses, in government reports about the health care workforce. This information is central to identifying and marketing the role and contribution of CNMs/CMs in the provision of primary and reproductive health care services.

“…Finally, an important area for further research is to assess whether involvement in this program helps participants graduate or attain AMCB certification. In fact, AMCB has only recently started to collect racial data from candidates for the certification examination and CNMs/CMs . Future evaluations may be able to use these data to assess the effect of mentoring programs on success rates.…”

“…Of these 8000 members, ACNM has maintained a membership base of only 5% to 6% CNMs/CMs of color for the past 3 decades, despite interventions to increase its members of color . While not based on systematic or contemporaneous sampling, Table demonstrates the diversity gap in the health professions of nursing and midwifery and within ACNM . The nursing profession is included because of its relevance to the pipeline needed to increase diversity in nurse‐midwifery.…”
