Ten adult Quinqueserialis quinqueserialis specimens were removed from the intestine of a naturally infected muskrat, and scanning electron microscopy was used to study the morphological characteristics of the trematodes. The mature trematode, which was easy to recognize by the monostome holdfast organ, with no anterior cone, measured 2200-2500 μm in length by 900-1050 μm in width. The body was elongated and tapering at the anterior end, but the posterior end was rounded, and in some specimens was slightly truncated. The mouth opening lay at the anterior end and was surrounded by the oral sucker, which was round, small to medium in size, and subterminal. The tegument of the rim and inside of the oral sucker was smooth and had two types of papillae, domed and rosette papillae. Around the oral sucker, tegument was covered with sharp, pointed spines. The common genital pore was located on the median line of the body, posterior to the oral sucker. The cirrus had smooth tegument at the base and was armed with numerous conical spines throughout its length. The ventral surface was concave and provided with five distinct longitudinal rows of ventral papillae, which extended from the anterior to the posterior end of the body. Each row consisted of 15 to 20 papillae, making 81 to 88 papillae in all. These papillae were variable in size. In most specimens, the papillae were simple knob-like structures, but in some cases, they appeared to be bi-or trifurcate. The tegument at the base of each ventral papilla showed minute spiny pattern, but it was smooth or folded on top and had small rosette and ciliated papillae. Tegument at the edges of the worm was smooth in the mid-parts, spiny on lateral parts, and included rosette papillae. The dorsal surface of the worm was smooth and slightly convex, and the tegument was provided with two large domed papillae in one third of the anterior end of the dorsal part, few thick spines in the mid-part, and excretory pore at the level just posterior to the end. No spines or papillae were seen around the excretory pore.

The type-specimens of Parspina argentinensis (Szidat, 1954) from Pimelodus maculatus Lacépède, and new material from Iheringichthys labrosus (Lütken), Parapimelodus valenciennis (Lütken), Pimelodella gracilis (Valenciennes), Pimelodus albicans (Valenciennes), P. argenteus Perugia and P. maculatus caught in the basins of the La Plata and Paraná Rivers, Argentina, were studied to elucidate its taxonomic status. The type-specimens of Parspina bagre Pearse, 1920 from Pimelodella metae Eigenmann in Lake Valencia, Venezuela, were also studied and new observations on its morphology recorded. The amendation of the generic diagnosis of Parspina Pearse, 1920 is proposed based on the study of both species, which revealed, among other features, the absence of a thin walled-membrane enclosing the male terminal genitalia. Parspina argentinensis is characterised by the following features: absence of a gonotyl; presence of a bipartite seminal vesicle, pars prostatica and ejaculatory duct; caeca of nearly equal length; uterus extending from the level of the ventral sucker to end of body; testes symmetrical to slightly oblique; ovary transversely elongate, compact and variable in shape; and the utilisation of a wide range of freshwater fishes as hosts. The tegumental surface of this species is covered with pectinate spines arranged quincuncially. Spines decrease in size and density from forebody to hindbody. There are two types of sensory papillae, ciliated and dome-shaped. Ciliated papillae are distributed on the surface of the oral region and on the dorsal and ventral surfaces of the body, whereas dome-shaped papillae are found on the surface of the ventral rim of the oral sucker associated with a ciliated papilla. Gland-duct openings are interspersed with the spines of the oral crown. In addition, the infection indices of P. argentinensis vary widely, not only among different hosts but also between the Paraná and La Plata River basins. Higher prevalences of P. argentinensis are recorded in the La Plata River, and Pimelodus albicans, P. maculatus and Iheringichthys labrosus are the principal final hosts in this area.

The stomach of the freshwater snakehead murrel, Channa striata (n = 250) collected from fresh water habitats of Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, India revealed Allogenarchopsis, a trematode parasite (Plagiorchiida: Derogenidae). An illustrated account of light (Olympus BX-53 with Cellsens software imaging system) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) (Neo JCM-6000) of Allogenarchopsis bareilliensis n. sp. (prevalence 37 %, intensity 1-4 par/host) is provided. Light microscopy based studies warranting creation of a new species are the robust shape of the body with broad mid-body, blunt anterior and tapering posterior end, large ventral sucker, ratio of oral sucker: ventral sucker 1:3.5, pharynx broader than long, egg size small with relatively short egg filament, excretory vesicle U-shaped bifurcating at posterior end and terminating above intestinal shoulders. Key characteristics of the tegumental microtopography by SEM are (1) an aspinous tegument with a variety of papillae of different shapes (button-like, dome-shaped) distributed randomly on the dorsal and ventral surface (2) oral sucker and oral cavity muscular with fringed margins and morphologically different oral papillae (3) lip of ventral sucker papillated including two unequally spaced rows of papillae with sensory receptacles interspersed in between, (4) unique differentially texturized cytoplasmic processes on the ventral sucker and (5) body folds grooved, gradually becoming narrower towards posterior end. This is the first record and study on Allogenarchopsis from Channa of Rohilkhand, India using electron optics. We recommend that the newly recognized morphological features as revealed by light microscopy and SEM be utilized as taxonomic tools in future for the identification of the species.
