The microstructure of polydisperse, charged colloidal suspensions by light and neutron scattering

Abstract: Structure measurements of a suspension of charged polystyrene spheres with significant polydispersity (16%) are reported for a wide range of particle and added salt concentrations and scattering wave vector. Small angle neutron scattering yielded the structure factors of concentrated samples that have had extensive rheological characterization. A Schulz distribution was used as a model of the particle size distribution to reduce the intensity data and as a basis for the theoretical fits of the structure factor… Show more

“…Equations [8] and [9] together are consistent with the linearized Poisson-Boltzmann theory, as the resulting Debye length is equal to that derived by Russel and Benzing (47). Note that ka is dependent on both the colloid charge neutrality and excluded volume effect implicit in Eqs.…”

“…The rise of the peak height S(q max ) as ϕ increases is in good agreement with earlier light scattering results by Wagner et al [14] on smaller particles. At higher volume fractions between about 0.3% and 0.5%, however, the structure factor peak drops significantly to what appears to be a minimum (see fig.…”

“…Major experimental tools for investigating the microstructure and diffusion of these systems are static and dynamic light scattering (SLS and DLS) (1-13) as well as small-angle X ray (14 -16) and neutron scattering experiments (17,18). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of monodisperse colloids have been investigated in great detail, much less is known with regard to polydisperse suspensions and colloidal mixtures.…”
