The microRNA-200 family: still much to discover

Abstract: In the last decade, microRNAs (miRs or miRNAs) became of great interest in cancer research due to their multifunctional and active regulation in a variety of vital cellular processes. In this review, we discuss the miR-200 family, which is composed of five members (miR-141, miR-200a/200b/200c and miR-429). Although being among the best investigated miRNAs in the field, there are still many open issues. Here, we describe the potential role of miR-200 as prognostic and/or predictive biomarker, its influence on m… Show more

“…The up-regulation of miR-200 family members, and the subsequent accelerated epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), intravasation, and increased motility are well-characterized phenomena in various cancers in vitro [13]. In prostate cancer, miR-200a, with a 5.17-fold increase when set against benign tissue, was one of the most obviously up-regulated miRNAs included in a recent meta-analysis.…”

“…Expression levels of miRNAs are profoundly altered during carcinogenesis, but alterations in miRNA profiles may also initiate tumour growth and metastasis [12, 13]. Some miRNAs are considered to be “redoxmiRs,” as they have an essential influence on redox-state regulation [14, 15].…”

“…Based on the structure of these members, they are also divided into two functional groups, the difference between them is about the third nucleotide of seed sequences. Functional group 1 is miR-200a/141, whose seed sequence is AACACUG, the other is miR-200b/c/429, whose seed sequence is AAUACUG [43] (Fig. 7).…”

“…19 However, it is still not clear how miRNAs control NPC progression and metastasis. 20 The miR-200 family of miRNAs is comprised of five members. In humans, miR-200a, miR-200b, and miR-429 are located on chromosome 1p36.33, while miR-200c and miR-141 are located on chromosome 12p13.31.…”
