The micronutrient supplements, zinc sulphate and folic acid, did not ameliorate sperm functional parameters in oligoasthenoteratozoospermic men

Abstract: We investigated the effects of folic acid and zinc sulphate supplementation on the improvement of sperm function in subfertile oligoasthenoteratozoospermic (OAT) men. Eighty-three OAT men participated in a 16-week intervention randomised, double-blind clinical trial with daily treatment of folic acid (5 mg day(-1) ) and zinc sulphate (220 mg day(-1) ), or placebo. Before and after treatment, semen and blood samples were obtained for determining sperm concentration, motility, and morphology, sperm viability, sp… Show more

“…Dietary antioxidants may be beneficial in reducing sperm DNA damage, particularly, in men with high levels of DNA fragmentation [5]. Five out of 32 studies confirmed that the usage of different antioxidants had important influence on DNA fragmentation and chromatin integrity [20, 42–46]. Song et al showed that combination of Chinese medicine Compound Xuanju Capsule with vitamin E taken for 3 months decreased degree of DNA fragmentation index (DFI) after therapy to 29.57 ± 12.19 compared just to vitamin E with degree of DFI of 34.09 ± 10.32 ( P < 0.05) [42].…”

“…Nevertheless, there is a dearth of data about the role of Zn in both human seminal plasma and serum regarding sperm' capacity for fertilization (Zhao et al, ). In men, Zn plays an important role in normal testicular development, increased sperm concentration and sperm motility (Khan, Zaman, Sajjad, Shoaib, & Gilani, ; Raigani et al, ). Besides, Zn is associated with decreased oxidative stress and improved spermatogenesis (Gabrielsen & Tanrikut, ).…”

“…The high seminal plasma concentration of Zn could play several roles in the stability of sperm membranes (Chvapil, 1973) and the stability of sperm chromatin (Björndahl & Kvist, 2010) 2016). In men, Zn plays an important role in normal testicular development, increased sperm concentration and sperm motility (Khan, Zaman, Sajjad, Shoaib, & Gilani, 2011;Raigani et al, 2014). “…Several researches confirm the repairing and maintenance role of FA during oxidative stress 32 . However, Raigani reported FA supplementation did not ameliorate sperm quality in infertile men 28 . The FA successfully alleviated the SOD, GPx depletion and MDA elevation 29 .…”
