The Methodological Dynamism of Grounded Theory

Abstract: Variations in grounded theory (GT) interpretation are the subject of ongoing debate. Divergences of opinion, genres, approaches, methodologies, and methods exist, resulting in disagreement on what GT methodology is and how it comes to be. From the postpositivism of Glaser and Strauss, to the symbolic interactionist roots of Strauss and Corbin, through to the constructivism of Charmaz, the field of GT methodology is distinctive in the sense that those using it offer new ontological, epistemological, and methodo… Show more

“…Before coding, data familiarisation occurred by a process of reading the transcribed interviews, and re‐listening to audio‐recorded interviews to develop an understanding of participant experiences and perspectives. Data were then inductively analysed using open coding, categorised, and built into themes by five coders independently (NR, JD, SKC, LZ, LE). Coders were qualified in social and behavioural science (JD, SKC, LZ, LE) and nursing (NR, SKC) with 2 to 20 years of experience working in prostate cancer survivorship.…”

Although grounded theory was first proposed by Glaser and Strauss (1967), the method adopted in this study follows that of Strauss of doing analysis and working with data, centered on pragmatism as a philosophical worldview (Corbin & Strauss, 2015;, 1998.…”

“…Una vez que la información se había codificado, se describieron los ejemplos prototípicos de cada una. Finalmente, las categorías se contrastaron para clasificar de forma precisa toda la información (Ralph, Birks y Chapman, 2015).…”
