The Metabolic Syndrome

Abstract: The metabolic syndrome is composed of cardiovascular risk factors including increased body mass index/waist circumference, blood pressure, plasma glucose, and triglycerides, as well as decreased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. The essence of the metabolic syndrome lies in the clustering of these risk factors, which are associated with cardiovascular disease. Interestingly, most of the components of the metabolic syndrome have individually been linked in some way to the development of cancer. However, epi… Show more

“…Several mechanisms have been proposed regarding the effect of the metabolic syndrome on the risk of colorectal adenomas, including obesity [41], oxidative stress [42], inflammation [43], and insulin resistance [44,45]. In support of results reported in previous studies [13,14,15,16,17,18], the present study showed that the metabolic syndrome itself and its individual components (i.e.…”

“…Obesity is accompanied with the up-regulation of various cellular proliferation pathways [35]. Adipokines and estrogens, produced in adipose tissue, may enhance tumor cell proliferation and metastasis [35,36,37], and may potentially result in more aggressive ER-positive cancers in postmenopausal women [16]. …”

“…This syndrome is defined by insulin insensitivity, abnormal glucose levels, elevated lipid and blood pressure levels and increased waist circumference [8]. Metabolic syndrome is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease [9], diabetes [10], and some cancers such as colorectal, breast, and prostate cancers [11][12][13][14][15][16].…”
