The Metabolic Profile Test: Its Practicability in Assessing Feeding Management and Periparturient Diseases in High Yielding Commercial Dairy Herds.

Abstract: ABSTRACT. The aim of this study was to evaluate the practicability of using the metabolic profile test (MPT) as a preventive tool for periparturient disease of dairy cows. The MPT was assessed in 79 dairy herds with high incidence of periparturient disease and 76 healthy herds of cows producing more than 8,500 kg 305-day milk yield. The changes in metabolic profiles were also assessed in 17 dairy herds at two times, the first at high incidence of periparturient disease and the second after reduced incidence an… Show more

“…The marked increase in NEFA between day 0 to day 30 seems to be related to the onset of periparturient diseases and a low WCR in Herd B. On the other hand, the incidence of periparturient diseases in Herd C could be related to a low TC concentration during the dry period since a low TC concentration in the dry period was observed in the herds with a high incidence of periparturient diseases [11].…”

“…Globulin could be considered an indication of inflammation. A sign of high incidence of periparturient diseases is high globulin and glucose levels in early postpartum [17], as well as a lower A/G ratio in the AUC-up group compared with the AUC-down group.…”

“…Statistical analysis: According to the diagnosis by 10-day criteria [23,24], the deviation from the reference value of each MPT component and milk production was calculated as shown below. Deviation = (actual value -reference mean value) / reference standard deviation value…”
