The Metabolic Effects of Oats Intake in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract: The present study aimed to comprehensively assess if oats intake is beneficial for diabetic patients. The literature search was conducted in PubMed database up to 23 August 2015. Fourteen controlled trials and two uncontrolled observational studies were included. Compared with the controls, oats intake significantly reduced the concentrations of glycosylated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) (MD, −0.42%; 95% CI, −0.61% to −0.23%), fasting blood glucose (FBG) (MD, −0.39 mmol/L; 95% CI, −0.58 to −0.19 mmol/L), total choles… Show more

“…< 200 mg/dl was higher in intervention arm, 19 out of 36 (52.8%) subjects as against control arm, where 12 out of 33 subjects (36.4%) had total cholesterol levels within the normal range. It has been observed that oats may be beneficial for insulin sensitivity and glycemic parameters, thus controlling serum triglycerides [27]. These actions may have resulted in stable serum triglyceride levels in the oats group vs. non-significant slight increase in the control group.…”

“…In recent studies, Ho et al (2016a), Yanai et al (2018), and Hou et al (2015) showed a significant association between dietary fiber intake and reduction of LDL-C. However, these studies did not found a significant effect of fiber on highdensity cholesterol (HDL)-C (Table 1).…”
