AimThe aim was to determine the overall levels and related factors of mental workload assessed using the NASA‐TLX tool among nurses.BackgroundMental workload is a key element that affects nursing performance. However, there exists no review regarding mental workload assessed using the NASA‐TLX tool, focusing on nurses.DesignA systematic review and meta‐analysis.Data SourcesPubMed, MEDLINE, Web of Science, EMBASE, PsycINFO, Scopus, CINAHL, CNKI, CBM, Weipu and WanFang databases were searched from 1 January 1998 to 30 February 2022.Review MethodsFollowing the PRISMA statement recommendations, review methods resulted in 31 quantitative studies retained for inclusion which were evaluated with the evaluation criteria for observational studies as recommended by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. The data were pooled and a random‐effects meta‐analysis conducted.ResultsFindings showed the pooled mental workload score was 65.24, and the pooled prevalence of high mental workload was 54%. Subgroup analysis indicated nurses in developing countries and emergency departments experienced higher mental workloads, and the mental workloads of front‐line nurses increased significantly during the COVID‐19 pandemic.ConclusionThese findings highlight that nurses experience high mental workloads as assessed using the NASA‐TLX tool and there is an urgent need to explore interventions to decrease their mental workloads.

Highlights: This article presents an understudied topic of nursing workloads in a hemodialysis unit and concludes that directly and indirectly productive activities occupied the majority of the nurses' working time. An analysis using the Workload Indicators of Staffing Need produced a general report that may prompt re-evaluation of nursing staff requirements and policy-making for workload distribution. Abstract The number of hemodialysis patients continues to increase almost every month, while the number of nurses in the Hemodialysis Unit at Rasyida Renal Specialist Hospital, Medan, Indonesia, remains constant. This situation has increased the nurses' workload and responsibilities. Therefore, it is necessary to examine the balance between the workload and the number of required nursing staff in the Hemodialysis Unit at Rasyida Renal Specialist Hospital. This study aimed to identify the optimal number of nursing staff required in the Hemodialysis Unit at the hospital in 2022. This study used a mixed-methods approach using the Workload Indicators of Staffing Need (WISN) method. This study included 44 nurses working in the Hemodialysis Unit at Rasyida Renal Specialist Hospital. Primary data included questionnaires, observations, and interviews during working hours, while secondary data included document reviews and staffing data. WISN calculations showed that the Hemodialysis Unit required a total of 65 nursing staff. In other words, an addition of 21 nursing staff was needed to meet the current workload. In conclusion, the current human resources available are not sufficient, and the workload is beyond the capacity of the nursing staff at the hospital.

The relationship between mental workload and job performance among Iranian nurses providing care to COVID‐19 patients: A cross‐sectional study

Aims To evaluate the relationship between mental workload and job performance among nurses providing care to patients with COVID‐19, and to explain the factors predicting their performance. Background The increased workload of health care workers in the COVID‐19 pandemic affects their job performance, causes medical errors, contributes to patients’ mortality and is a major concern for all health care organisations in the world. Methods This cross‐sectional study recruited 139 nurses selected from the ICUs, infectious disease wards and emergency units of two hospitals in Iran. The NASA‐Task Load Index and Paterson's job performance questionnaire were used. Results Mean scores of mental workload and job performance of the nurses were 67.14 ± 30.53 and 37.37 ± 7.36, respectively. A total of 71.95% and 96.4% of the nurses had high mental workload and job performance levels, respectively. The results indicated a weak positive correlation between mental workload and the mean score of job performance( r = .057). Unlike the mental demand ( r = .175, p = .04) and temporal demand ( r = .307, p < .001) that had a significant positive correlation with job performance, frustration had a significant negative correlation with job performance ( r = −.183, p = .032). The following variables explained 33% of the variance of nurses’ job performance: age, gender, type of ward, working shift, experience of providing care to patients with COVID‐19 and frustration. Conclusion The nurses’ mental workload increased during the COVID‐19 pandemic. Given the negative effect of mental workload on the nurses’ behaviour and performance, the rise in their job performance and its weak positive correlation with their mental workload should be further addressed. Implications for Nursing Management The present study results support the need for focusing on implementing strategies such as providing social and psychological support to moderate mental workload and improve job performance of nurses who provide care to patients with COVID‐19.
