The memory of iron stress in strawberry plants

Abstract: To provide information towards optimization of strategies to treat Fe deficiency, experiments were conducted to study the responses of Fe-deficient plants to the resupply of Fe. Strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) was used as model plant. Bare-root transplants of strawberry (cv. 'Diamante') were grown for 42 days in Hoagland's nutrient solutions without Fe (Fe0) and containing 10 μM of Fe as Fe-EDDHA (control, Fe10). For plants under Fe0 the total chlorophyll concentration of young leaves decreased progress… Show more

“…FCR activity in plants growing under Fe deficiency is generally induced [71], but some studies report a decreasing activity of this enzyme in soybean plants growing under restricted Fe supply [72,73]. In fact, there are studies evidencing that FCR activity is species and cultivar dependent [67,74], which may explain our contrasting results.…”

“…Chlorophyll contents increased with Fe application and the SPAD values were generally around 50 under sufficient Fe supply. Gama et al (2016) reported similar for SPAD values under Fe deficiency in strawberry. Pestana et al (2012a) compared the responses of carob (Ceratonia siliqua L.) and three-foil lemon (Poncirus trifoliata (L.) Raf) tree rootstocks against Fe deficiency under hydroponic conditions with different Fe levels.…”

“…Cultivated strawberries, Fragaria × ananassa Duch., are among the most sensitive species to Fe-deficiency (Álvarez-Fernández et al 2006;Pestana et al 2011;Alkan Torun et al 2013, 2014. Several studies have reported varied response of large number of strawberry cultivars to Fe deficiency in different growth mediums (Alkan Torun et al 2013, 2014Kafkas et al 2007;Gama et al 2016).…”

“…It resulted in more or less stable Fe:Mn ratio, which implies that the studied species are adapted to tolerate increased Mn uptake as a side effect of Fe scavenging. It is worth noting that low Fe:Mn ratio is known to promote chlorosis ( Gama et al, 2016 ; Zamboni et al, 2017 ; Wala et al, 2020 ). However, the studied species of Centaurea are able to operate without signs of chlorosis when this parameter is even lower than in chlorosis-resistant calcicole plant species from xerothermic grasslands, e.g ., Salvia verticillata L. or Veronica teucrium L. ( Wala et al, 2020 ).…”
