The Mediterranean diet and age-related cognitive functioning: A systematic review of study findings and neuropsychological assessment methodology

Abstract: One of the important challenges for future research will be to aim toward some kind of standardized neuropsychological assessment criteria. This type of endeavor will enable the ability to validate with greater confidence, whether or not adherence to a MedDiet does promote benefit for age-related cognitive function.

“…The MedDietScore, DASH, and BSD were initially proposed as eating practices with health claims other than prevention of age-related cognitive dysfunction [ 5 , 19 , 23 ]. Mediterranean diet has been related to a reduced risk of cognitive dysfunction in some North American and Mediterranean populations, but not in Nordic countries [ 24 , 25 , 26 ]. The MIND index is tailored to promote cognitive function and includes specific vegetables, specific fruit and dairy products, and a “fast/fried foods” component.…”

However, we speculate the associations found between cognitive impairment and nutritional and functional parameters may have been stronger with inclusion of more individuals with severe cognitive impairment and also with the use of more sensitive tools than the MMSE to measure subtle changes in a range of cognitive abilities [ 72 , 73 ].…”

“…Second, the present study was a well-controlled, dietary intervention trial, where participants were monitored meticulously by dietitians through all stages of the intervention to ensure compliance >90% to the dietary intervention was obtained. Third, both the MedDiet and the cognitive test battery chosen for the MedLey study were based upon detailed systematic reviews [ 46 , 47 ] corresponding to a MedDiet and cognitive test battery with notable methodological rigour.…”
