Economic globalization promotes industrial division and forms a large stream of products between countries all over the world, which leads to serious environmental problems. The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between green logistics and international trade. Heckman's two-stage procedure is employed to estimate an augmented gravity model that specifically includes green logistics variables with the data of 113 countries and regions over the period between 2007-2014. The findings show that the logistics performance index (LPI) of exporting and importing countries are positively correlated with trade volume, and that the LPI of exporting countries positively affects trade probability. Taking the entire sample into account, the green logistics performance of exporting countries positively affects export probability and volume. For trade flows between developing-developing countries, developed-developed countries, and developed-developing countries, the green logistics performance of importing countries has a negative impact on the export volume of exporting countries. In terms of trade flow between developing-developed countries, the green logistics performance of importing countries has a negative impact on export probability and a positive impact on export volume. The present research results will assist governments and exporters in understanding the relationship between green logistics and international trade, and help improve their policies and green operations toward sustainable development.

Measuring the relative importance of the logistics performance index indicators using Best Worst Method

Globalization has led to an increased need for international freight transportation and, with it, international logistics. To measure the performance of countries in terms of logistics, in 2007 the World Bank created the Logistics Performance Index (LPI), which uses six core indicators to rank countries with regard to their overall logistics performance. In the past decade, the LPI has been widely used by policymakers and researchers to formulate measures on logistics and freight transportation. At the moment, however, the different indicators are all regarded as being equally important when the overall index score is calculated, which seems highly unlikely within the complex system of logistics. This research assigns weights to the six components using the Best Worst Method (BWM), a multi-criteria decision-analysis method. A questionnaire among 107 experts from different countries found significant differences with the equal weights used in the current LPI. Infrastructure is considered the most important component for logistics performance, with a weight of 0.24, more than twice as important as tracking and tracing, which is considered to be the least important factor, with a weight of 0.10. The findings are relevant for policymakers in transportation and logistics. Although the weights now have only a mild effect on rankings due to the correlation between the LPI indicators, they may point towards different policy priorities compared to the current LPI. Our results also point out some possible weaknesses in the LPI methodology.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to develop and test theory-driven hypotheses on the influence of corruption and gender inequality on logistics performance. Design/methodology/approach This paper develops hypotheses based on a review of the literature and theory linking corruption, gender inequality and logistics performance. Testing the hypotheses draws on the following secondary data sources: the World Bank Logistics Performance Index, Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index and the United Nations Development Programme Gender Inequality Index. Regression analysis is used to test the hypotheses. Findings A significant direct effect is evident between corruption perceptions and perceived logistics performance. Corruption is detrimental to logistics. Further, there is evidence of an indirect effect, via gender inequality. Gender inequality is also linked directly to lower logistics performance. Gross domestic product/capita enters the analysis as a control variable. Research limitations/implications While the analysis uses secondary data, sources are credible and their methods – while not perfect – are logical and appear to be reasonable. It is possible that excluded variables could further explain the relationships under study. This implies future research opportunities, perhaps involving case studies of specific nations. Practical implications The results should inspire businesses, non-governmental organizations and governments to invest in, aid, advocate for and legislate toward greater gender equality – and against corruption. Logistics educators have an important role in disseminating this message. Social implications Gender inequality and corruption are current, global social issues. Moving forward toward equality and away from corruption are the right moves. Such moves appear to also yield better logistics. Originality/value This paper is among the first linking corruption and gender inequality to logistics performance. It shows how social issues impact logistics performance at a national level.
