SiAlON window coatings are applied on an industrial scale to achieve e.g. scratch-resistance and anti-reflection. Doping these SiAlONs with rare-earths adds luminescent functionality, which could be applied in photovoltaics. By using a combinatorial reactive sputtering approach, an amorphous thin film composition library with a Si:Al ratio from 0.062 : 1 to 3.375 : 1 and a Eu doping from 4.8 at.% to 26 at.% is created. This library uniquely combines high absorption, strong emission and absence of light scattering. By combining position-dependent EDX measurements with transmission and emission spectra, properties like the index of refraction, absorption strength, emission wavelength and decay times of the library can directly be related to the composition. Throughout the library, an index of refraction of 1.63 ± 0.03 is observed, typical for a film with low nitrogen content. The library also shows a large absorption coefficient of 1294 ± 8 cm −1 at.% −1 . Laser-excited emission spectra show that the library has a strong redshift from 500 nm to 550 nm with increasing Al concentration. An increase in Eu concentration also causes a shift of the emission to red. Decay spectra show that a high degree of Si greatly improves the luminescence intensity. These functionalized SiAlON coatings can be of great interest for transparent and scatter-free luminescent solar concentrators applied as windows.

Abstract. The effect of electrolyte concentration and potential determining ions on the coagulation and flocculation of illite, dolomite, and illite-dolomite mixture suspensions was investigated. Electrokinetic measurements, settling rate tests, and viscosity measurements were performed to examine the stability of these mineral suspensions and to characterize flocculants under various physico-chemical conditions. Two flocculants: A-100 anionic polyacrylamide (PAM) and polyethylene oxide (PEO) were employed. The tests revealed that polyethylene oxide does not flocculate dolomite under any tested conditions. Viscosity results corroborated that the conformation of PAM macro- molecules in water is very sensitive to electrolyte concentration; on the other hand, the conformational state of PEO macromolecules is not affected by ionic strength. The intrinsic viscosity measurements suggest that the unattainable flocculation of dolomite suspensions with PEO must result from poor adsorption of this flocculant onto dolomite particles. In both tested cases, with PAM and PEO, the relationship between coagulation and flocculation was not confirmed. Resumen. Se investigó el efecto de la concentración electrolítica y iones determinantes de potencial en la coagulación y floculación de suspensiones de ilita, dolomita y mezcla de ilita-dolomita. Mediciones electrocinéticas, ensayos de velocidad de sedimentación, y mediciones de viscosidad fueron realizadas para examinar la estabilidad de estas suspensiones minerales y caracterizar floculantes bajo varias condiciones fisicoquímicas. Se empleó dos floculantes: A-100 poliacrilamida aniónica (PAM) y óxido de polietileno (PEO). Los experimentos revelaron que el óxido de polietileno no flocula la dolomita bajo ninguna condición empleada. Los resultados de viscosidad corroboraron que la conformación de las macromoléculas PAM en agua es sensible a la concentración electrolítica; por otro lado, el estado conformacional de las macromoléculas de PEO no se ve afectado por la fuerza iónica. Las mediciones de viscosidad intrínseca sugieren que la floculación inalcanzable de las suspensiones de dolomita con PEO debe ser resultado de una mala adsorción de este floculante en las partículas de dolomita. En ambos casos probados, con PAM y PEO, no se confirmó la relación entre coagulación y floculación.

Non-communicable diseases caused 16 million early deaths in 2016 according to the data published by the World Heatlh Organization. Insufficient physical activity has become an international concern since several years ago and it is strongly related to these early deaths. The present study estimated the mortality and economic expenses of cardiovascular diseases caused by physical inactivity in Spain. Mortality attributable to physical inactivity (MA) was evaluated as the product between the population attributable fraction (PAF) and the number of deaths caused by associated cardiovascular diseases. The statistical value of life (SVL) was determined, following the human capital approach, from which SVL was estimated through the productivity lost by early death. The economic expenses were calculated using MA and SVL, classifying by gender, age group and level of physical activity. A sensitivity analysis was carried out to evaluate how the expenses vary in three possible scenarios. MA is very different regarding age and sex, with maximum levels in men between 35 and 69 years. The early death of younger individuals is more expensive, with a much lower SVL in old adults. The economic cost is much higher in the sample group with low physical activity, with an increase from 35 years and maximum values at 55-59 years. The economic costs varied, with 0.31% of the GDP for the minimum scenario, 0.09% for the medium scenario, and 0.03% for the maximum scenario. It is recommended to reinforce the development of public policies aimed at reducing sedentarism and physical inactivity in Spain.
