The mechanism of wrinkling of cotton fabric in a front-loading washer: The effect of mechanical action

Abstract: In order to understand the impact of mechanical action on the wrinkling of cotton fabrics in a drum washer, fabric movement was observed and a movement index system was developed to characterize the textile motion. Results showed that spinning speed and wash load were the major factors influencing the smoothness of cotton fabrics, with p values of 0.000 and 0.032, respectively. The analysis of fabric movement illustrated that when the wash load increased, the free motion region decreased and the ratio of passi… Show more

“…Since washing takes place in a closed, well-mixing solid-liquid system with physical and chemical reaction, the study of hydrodynamic effects can be carried out according to theoretical (solution of the equation Navier Stokes) and experimental (tracer experiment) approaches [16]. This has been the subject of numerous studies with the aim of better describing the motion in the washing machine in order to optimize the washing process [14,[17][18][19][20][21][22][23].…”

“…It was observed that the crease recovery of cotton fabrics decreases as yarn twist increases [7]. Similarly, Liu et al investigated the impact of mechanical action on the wrinkling of cotton fabrics in a drum washer [8]. Th ey observed that the spinning speed and wash load were the main factors infl uencing the smoothness of cotton fabrics.…”

“…The influence of mechanics on the release of polymer fibrils in washing, especially when it comes from textiles, has been a focus of the scientific community in the last few years [12]. The washing machine design type affects the hydrodynamics, the transport of textiles, and the baths inside the drum.…”
