“…Cholestasis observed in patients with hydatid cysts can be due to rupture of the cyst into the bile ducts, where the daughter cysts cause obstruction of the biliary tree (1,(9)(10)(11)(12)(13)(14)(15)(16). This leads to jaundice, cholangitis and biliary colicky pain and can mimic acute cholecystitis (16).…”

“…Mechanical compression of the cyst on the bile ducts can also cause cholestasis (1,9,20), as in case 2 in which jaundice was the only symptom without pain or discomfort.…”

“…Despite the obvious dangers of percutaneous cyst puncture 6 , 7 , 11 , a report of the use of percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography (PTC) via the hepatic hydatid cyst in 13 patients with obstructive jaundice 12 showed that 10 had ruptured cysts, causing distortion and obstruction to the biliary tree with intraductal hydatid material in five cases. The remaining three cases had mechanical obstruction to bile ducts due to unruptured cysts.…”

“…The most common complication of hepatic hydatid cyst is rupture of the cyst because of raised pressure within it. The rupture rate into the bile ducts is 5 ± 20 % [1 ± 3] and the rupture causes icterus due to obstruction of the bile duct [4]. During enlargement of the hydatid cyst, surrounding vascular structures are displaced while the bile duct remains in the pericyst.…”
