This paper describes the influence on the compressive and dissipative behavior of entangled metallic wire material (EMWM) samples provided by their size and mutual connectivity. The mechanical properties of EMWM specimens with different thicknesses are obtained from quasi-static compressive and cyclic loading. The behavior of the stress-strain curves, tangent modulus, and loss factor are strongly dependent on the thickness of the samples. The analysis from samples connected in different layouts shows that apart from the global thickness, size scale effects and contact interface also play important roles in controlling the behavior of EMWM systems. The importance of the sample size and its connectivity with adjacent different layers are defined by the unique microstructure and contact properties of the wires near the specimen boundary layer. The boundary layer produces different mechanical behaviors and a distinct structural configuration compared to the EMWM bulk solid. These peculiar characteristics are confirmed by microstructural and qualitative observations obtained from computed tomography scanning. The results and analysis presented in this work are relevant to designing EMWM material systems with adaptive performance under different loading and geometric constraints.

In this paper, the dynamic compressive mechanical properties of entangled metallic wire material (EMWM) under low-velocity impact were investigated and the constitutive model for EMWM under low-velocity impact was established. The research in this paper is based on a series of drop-hammer tests. The results show that the energy absorption rate of EMWM is in the range from 50% to 85%. Moreover, the EMWM with a higher relative density would not plastically deform macroscopically and has excellent characteristics of repetitive energy absorption. With the increase in relative density, the maximum deformation of EMWM decreases gradually, and the impact force of EMWM increases gradually. With the increase in impact-velocity, the phenomenon of stiffness softening before reaching the maximum deformation of EMWM becomes more significant. A constitutive model for EMWM based on the Sherwood-Frost model was established to predict the dynamic compressive mechanical properties of EMWM. The accuracy of the model was verified by comparing the calculated results with the experimental data of the EMWM with different relative densities under different impact-velocities. The comparison results show that the established model can properly predict the dynamic compressive mechanical characteristics of EMWM under low-velocity impact loading.

Study on the Mechanical Properties of Metal Rubber with Complex Contact Friction of Spiral Coils based on Virtual Manufacturing Technology

Metal rubber (MR) is an elastic porous material with a complex spiral network structure, which is widely used in aerospace, aviation, navigation, medical biomaterials, and other fields. The traditional preparation processes depend on multiple tests or artificial experience, which leads to time‐consuming and laborious. Herein, a virtual manufacturing method is proposed to realize the spatial multipoint dynamic contact analysis of a complex spiral network structure, that is, to study the mechanical properties of MR from the micro‐tribological point of view. Through real‐time capturing the spatial distribution characteristics of each contact point and the number of contact pairs and contact mode, it is found that the number of dry friction contact points between the wires is nonlinear positive correlation with the damping energy dissipation characteristics of MR. The preparation parameters, such as the wire diameter, the spiral wire pitch, and the blank winding angle, are selected to be investigated, and the controlling variable method is used to analyze the single factor influence in the virtual preparation process. The results show that the damping and energy consumption characteristics of MR can be improved effectively by reducing the wire diameter, by reducing the spiral wire pitch, or by increasing the winding angle of the blank. However, too small or too large preparation parameters cause stress concentration and affect the mechanical properties of the actual materials. The quasi‐static compression test is carried out through the preparation of the products, and the error between simulation and experiment results is <8%. Herein, the mechanism of contact friction between wire turns in MR is expounded. Also, this method can effectively guide the production of MR material, reduce the time of material design, and promote the popularization and application of the material.
