“…Individual cell masses were obtained by multiplying their estimated volumes with their physical density. The density of each cell was taken to be 1 g/cm 3 , the same as distilled water, as water is the major component of eukaryotic cells (Omori & Ikeda 1984, Kageyama et al 1989. Total ciliate biomass per milliliter was calculated as the sum of the masses of all ciliate cells found per milliliter of surveyed.…”

“…In vitro experiments have shown that hypoosmotic solutions cause erythrocyte lysis due to the passive movement of free water into the cytoplasm, causing the cell to assume a spheroid shape. In one experiment, it was found that maximal membrane surface tension was exceeded at mean cellular volume of 98.5 fL, leading to cell rupture (7). Other investigations have shown that normal erythrocytes will begin hemolyzing when placed in a saline concentration of Յ0.5%, corresponding to an osmolality threshold of approximately 170 -180 mOsm/L (7,8).…”

The osmotic hemolysis that occurred in the cases described, therefore, did not occur as would have been predicted by these in vitro studies.…”

“…Literature data indicate that cells contain about 70% of water [Kageyama et al, 1989]. The human epidermis mostly consisting of keratinocytes contains approximately the same amount of total water [Warner et al, 1988;Caspers et al, 2003].…”
