The MAVRIC–C and MAVRIC–P: A Preliminary Reliability and Validity Study

Abstract: We administered the Measure of Aggression, Violence, and Rage in Children (MAVRIC; Bass, Geenens, & Popper, 1993a, 1993b), a questionnaire assessing the severity of reactive, impulsive aggression, to 28 prepubertal psychiatrically hospitalized children and 54 prepubertal lowrisk nonpatients and their mothers. Cross-informant reliability was supported between the MAVRIC-Child Version (MAVRIC-C; Bass et al., 1993a) and MAVRIC-Parent Version (MAVRIC-P; Bass et al., 1993b), r = .62, p < .001. Convergent validity w… Show more

“…Children and carers completed the Measure of Aggression, Violence, and Rage in Children (MAVRIC), a measure of frequency and severity of aggression in children aged 5–18 years, in psychiatric outpatient/inpatient settings [17]. The 19 items on the MAVRIC-C (child version), which parallel those on the MAVRIC-P (parent version), contain between one and eight yes-no questions each, covering verbal and physical aggression and aggression against objects.…”

“…MAVRIC has good internal reliability and convergent validity with the Aggressive Behavior subscale of the CBCL [17]. A clinical cut-off of 10 was used [17,18]. The MAVRIC-C was read and explained to children, ensuring understanding.…”

“…A hallmark of rage outbursts is the reported unwillingness or inability to successfully resist destructive urges, often resulting in aggression towards others and/or damage to property (Debes et al 2008). Rage outbursts have been reported as frequently co-occurring with a variety of psychiatric disorders, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD; Carlson 2007), oppositional defiant disorder (ODD; Goodman et al 2006), anxiety disorders (Stoddard et al 2014), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD; Storch et al 2010Storch et al , 2012, depressive disorders (King et al 2006), bipolar disorder (Staton et al 2008) and autism spectrum disorders (ASD; Guttmann-Steinmetz et al 2009). …”
