The Matsucoccidae in the Mediterranean basin with a world list of species (Hemiptera: Sternorrhyncha: Coccoidea)

Abstract: RésuméAbstract -The matsucoccid scale insects inhabit the northern hemisphere, feed exclusively on Pinus spp., and some are very serious pests. This taxonomic revision of the Mediterranean species supports their status as valid species, despite the wide variation of certain morphological characters caused by environmental factors. For the genus redescription and illustrations, Matsucoccus matsumurae Kuwana, the type species of the genus, from Japan is used. The Mediterranean species, M. feytaudi, M. pini and M… Show more

“…Vahedi (2002) and Vahedi and Hodgson (2007) noted that the derm of mounted material showed a reticulate pattern of small humps, particularly on young specimens. A similar pattern of globular projections has been noted on adult female Matsucoccus feytaudi Ducasse (Matsucoccidae) (Foldi 2004). It is likely that these "projections" or dermal papillae allow the derm of the adult female to expand as she matures and her ovaries swell.…”

“…Since n = 5, this diet was not statistically analyzed; all individuals were dead in 7 days. reproduces on these two pine species (Foldi, 2004). Matsucoccus feytaudi and I. rondensis were found in P. pinaster from all examined regions except Catalonia.…”

“…Matsucoccus spp. are among the oldest known scale insects and they have no known parasitoids (Foldi, 2004). Thus if any pressure from natural enemies has constrained the evolution of the pine bast scales species this might have been from specialist predators.…”
