The mast cell in wound healing

Abstract: This review describes the role of the mast cell in the pathobiology of skin healing. After illustrating its main morphofunctional characteristics, with special reference to the dog and cat, we consider the involvement of the mast cell in the various phases of skin repair. With the aid of a wide array of newly formed or preformed mediators released by degranulation, the activated mast cell controls the key events of the healing phases: triggering and modulation of the inflammatory stage, proliferation of connec… Show more

“…Mast cells are well known mediators of injury-or infection-associated inflammation; however, recently additional functions for these cells have been suggested. In this respect, reports that suggest a role of mast cells in ECM-related processes during wound healing and fibrosis (Noli and Miolo, 2001;Puxeddu et al, 2003;Maurer et al, 2003) are of particular interest. Specifically, a role of mast cells in the aggregation of collagen fibers (Iba et al, 2004) or collagen lattice contraction (Moyer et al, 2004) has been investigated.…”

“…In this study, mast cells were found in close contact with fibroblasts. Mast cell activation is a characteristic feature of chronic inflammation, a condition that may lead to fibrosis as a result of increased collagen synthesis by a fibroblast [140][141][142][143][144].…”

“…These substances are involved in various inflammatory and immunological reactions (11). Distribution of mast cells in different lesions involving lymph nodes (12), breast (6), uterus (13), cervix (14), and prostate (15) were studied, as well as its presence in wound healing (16), pterygium (17), atherosclerosis (18) and other disorders (2,6,7,9). The presence of mast cells in normal testis of man and other species has been reported by various authors (1).…”
