The Marine Knowledge Exchange Network: Insights from an Innovative Regional-to-National Scale Academic-Led Knowledge-to-Impact Network and Recommendations for Future Initiatives

Abstract: This paper provides an overview of the approach taken by the Marine Knowledge Exchange Network (M-KEN) and an assessment of its activities in valorising and generating impact from research. M-KEN was formed in 2014 in response to a call for projects to accelerate impact generated from environmental research in the United Kingdom (UK). M-KEN was university-led and focussed in the eastern region of the UK but its approach to fostering impact has had international reach. Over the course of its first five years, M… Show more

“…In line with the REF, impact measurement is generally presented in the form of knowledge transfers between academic and non-academic stakeholders (Maythorne, 2019). If these transfers are supported with public funds, they should be assessed for efficiency and effectiveness using the Knowledge Exchange Framework (KEF), which supports the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) (Johnson et al, 2020).…”

“…As a result, numerous interactive approaches to KE have been identified and are now commonly implemented (reviewed in Karcher et al, 2021). Among others, these include co‐production (Chambers et al, 2021; Norström et al, 2020), boundary organizations (Cvitanovic et al, 2018; Guston, 2001), knowledge brokers (Cvitanovic et al, 2017; Michaels, 2009), and networks (Johnson et al, 2020; Kelemen et al, 2021). Such approaches are more inclusive than traditional modes of science communication like linear models of knowledge sharing, following the loading dock approach (Cash et al, 2006) and account for all interactions between knowledge ‘producers’ and ‘users’ throughout knowledge generation, sharing, mobilization, translation, and use (Best & Holmes, 2010; Cvitanovic, Hobday, Van Kerkhoff, & Marshall, 2015).…”

“…Example assessment of 'Marine and Coastal Carbon Sequestration' (MCCS) developed by the Marine Knowledge Exchange Network(Johnson et al, 2020) for the UK Shelf Sea Biogeochemistry Project. Standing carbon stocks and fluxes from the coast to the shelf are pictured together with an indication of their vulnerability.…”
