The many faces of Candida auris: Phenotypic and strain variation in an emerging pathogen

Darian J. Santana,
Guolei Zhao,
Teresa R. O’Meara

Abstract: Candida auris is an emerging fungal pathogen with unusual evolutionary history—there are multiple distinct phylogeographic clades showing a near simultaneous transition from a currently unknown reservoir to nosocomial pathogen. Each of these clades has experienced different selective pressures over time, likely resulting in selection for genotypes with differential fitness or phenotypic consequences when introduced to new environments. We also observe diversification within clades, providing additional opportu… Show more

“…This limited use of antifungal agents promotes the emergence of multiresistant fungal species such as Candida auris. [42,43] C. auris is an opportunistic pathogen often found in hospitals. Besides being multiresistant to antifungals, unlike other Candida species, C. auris is thermo-and osmotolerant, thriving in stressful conditions.…”
