The Manulua Framework: how combining multiple research methodologies and theoretical or conceptual frameworks strengthens research with Tongan participants

Abstract: When researching with Moana (ocean) or Pacific peoples, a key research consideration is which methodological approach will best acknowledge, engage, and value what is shared. The Manulua (two birds) Framework explores the experiences of successful Tongan science learners in Aotearoa New Zealand and the Kingdom of Tonga. The Manulua Framework draws on four very different theoretical or conceptual frameworks and methods, complementing (1) Tongan and Moana or Pacific approaches to research with aspects of (2) cri… Show more

“…The Manulua framework (Fonua, 2021) collects multiple theoretical frameworks together to recognise and allow for different ways of examining ontology, ways of being, epistemology, ways of knowing, and axiology, ways of valuing. It consists of four different theoretical-conceptual perspectives woven into a cohesive framework informed by Epeli Hau'ofa's seminal 1993 essay "Our Sea of Islands", and the articles of support and critique found in A New Oceania (Waddell et al, 1993) to locate Oceania as the context, connector and source.…”

“…Pacific research methodologies are in acknowledgment to Pacific values, protocols, knowledge and beliefs (Fonua, 2021). The motivation of applying these relevant Pacific methodologies is to "build on the familiar in order to unlock and unpack the unfamiliar" that can only be understood from a Pacific viewpoint (Amituanai-Toloa, 2009, p. 51).…”

“…This aspect of teu le va is crucial in understanding Pacific peoples' epistemologies. Relational ethics, applied by Pacific scholars Garner and Pouono (2021), Anae et al (2010) and Fonua (2021), highlight the efficacy of nurturing the relational space or the v a within relationships rather than focusing on the participant as an individual (Fonua, 2021). Applying teu le v a to critical disaster studies, together with Talanoa, transforms collaborative relationships through facilitating personal and collective relationships to achieve appropriate outcomes.…”

“…This thesis begins with the pivotal first day of official fieldwork in Palauli, taking its cue from āganu'u Sāmoa itself, where any malaga (journey or visiting party) starts: For many Pacific nations, that has meant calling western scholars to task for continuing to practice and perpetuate archaic colonial attitudes (Trask 1991;Hau'ofa 1994b;Smith 1999), a greater push for the repatriation of cultural treasures held in western museums and archives (Greer 2012;Aranui 2018;Puertollano 2021), or replacing western epistemologies with more culturally relevant Indigenous frameworks (Gegeo 1994;Thaman 1992;Smith 1992;Tamasese, Peteru and Waldegrave 1997;Nabobo-Baba 2006;Pulotu-Endemann 2009;Sauni 2011;Naepi 2019;Ka'ili, Mahina and Addo 2017;Futter-Puati and Maua-Hodges 2019;Fonua 2021). Sāmoa is not immune to these conditions, and this chapter explores how archaeology has existed in these islands, but, more significantly, how it has been purposefully adapted to the local culture of Independent Sāmoa and the broader demands of āganu'u Sāmoa.…”
