The Manufacture, Properties, and Uses of Polyvinyl Formal

Abstract: Polyvinyl formal (“Formvar”®) is manufactured by simultaneous hydrolysis and acetalization of polyvinyl acetate. Composition and resulting properties can be varied. These resins uniquely combine rigidity and toughness. Moldability is improved by lowered molecular weight and plasticizers. Solvents are few. Retention of more acetate groups leads to more general solubility and lowered strength and dimensional stability.A major application is in wire enamel, where cross‐linking occurs. Solutions are also used for s… Show more

“…A solvent process with concurrent hydrolysis and acetalization is used to produce PVF resin (21,(33)(34)(35). The hydrolysis of poly(vinyl acetate) and acetalization of the resultant poly(vinyl alcohol) to the formal are carried out concurrently in an aqueous acetic acid solution that also contains a strong mineral acid catalyst.…”

“…Poly(vinyl formal) (PVFM) prepared via condensation reaction of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) with formaldehyde has been developed since 1924. Now it is widely used in manufactured enamels for heat-resistant wire insulations for electrical applications and in adhesives, water-resistant fibers, sponges (foamed plastics), implants for the human body, and membranes for reverse osmosis [1][2][3][4][5] . Interestingly, foamed PVFM has very special properties, such as high water absorption capability and strength and rigidity at dry state and excellent wear resistance and flexibility at wet state, comparing with the other traditional foamed plastics.…”

“…S2, ESI†) and is soluble in many organic solvents, allowing its electrospinning. 27 Nanofibers were loaded with 9.1 wt% 8HQ, or 9.1 wt% STZ, or a mixture of 9.1 wt% 8HQ and 9.1 wt% STZ and immersed in a buffer solution at pH 7.0. The PVF/8HQ, PVF/STZ and PVF/8HQ/STZ nanofibers displayed a well-defined structure and a smooth surface (Fig.…”
