The manipulation of an unstarting supersonic flow by plasma actuator

Abstract: The manipulation of an unstarting supersonic flow is demonstrated using a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD). Experiments are carried out in a Mach 4.7 model inlet flow. Flow features, such as boundary layers and shockwaves at low freestream static pressure (1 kPa) and temperature (60 K) are visualized with Rayleigh scattering from condensed CO2 particles. Flow unstart, initiated by mass injection, is studied for three model inlet flow configurations, distinguished by the initial conditions (untripped or tripp… Show more

“…M ETHODS of supersonic and hypersonic boundary-layer (BL) flow control by electrical discharges have previously been studied extensively [1][2][3][4], showing a plausible controlling effect due to a nonuniform localized heating of the near-surface gas layer. Of a particular interest to this study is the effect of a pulsed plasma actuator on the flow oscillations along a flat plate leading up to a compression ramp with a separation zone in hypersonic flow.…”

“…The tiny water droplets will condense due to a sudden temperature drop when the flow is expanded through the divergent section of the nozzle [35]. As a result, nanometer-sized particles will be generated in the test section [37]. In the captured PLS images, the jet plume from PSJA is seen as darker region because of sublimation of the water particle at the lower density and higher, whereas the free stream is seeded with the particles.…”

“…This tunneling process is termed field emission and is accounted for by the modified Paschen's curve [8]. Surface discharges generated by dielectric bar rier discharge (DBD) actuators have been widely used to manipulate flow [9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16]. The electrohydrodynamic (EHD) body force generated by the plasma transfers momentum from charged particles to neutrals, which enables directed flow actuation [17].…”
