The 'Mangrove Reference Database and Herbarium'

Abstract: The main objective of the online Mangrove Reference Database and Herbarium is to give a current and historic overview of the global, regional and local distribution of true mangrove species. This database has been initiated in 2001 by the Vlaams Instituut voor de Zee (VLIZ) and the Flanders Marine Data and Information Center (VMDC) in collaboration with the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) and the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). All the data are based on records containing species location information (li… Show more

“…However, R. mangle does not grow in Camboriú [64] and its distribution is therefore more discontinuous than that reported by other authors [7,8]. The same discontinuity was also reported for other mangrove species elsewhere in the world [65]. However, in Brava Beach in Itajaí (BIO6 = 11.3˝C), just about 10 km north of Camboriú, there is a record of R. mangle [64], which leads us to question whether this is due to physiological or dispersal limitations.…”

“…The whole area is characterized by a soft muddy soil and influenced by semidiurnal tides originating from the East Sea (tidal amplitude 2-3 m) and by the diurnal tides from the Gulf of Thailand (tidal amplitude 0.5-0.8 m) (Hong and San, 1993). More importantly, Ca Mau supports the most substantial area of mangroves (Hong and San, 1993), and it is a natural mangrove ecosystem with a high conservation value for its biodiversity and scenic beauty (MAB Vietnam, 2008 (Hung and Tan, 1999;Massó i Alemán et al, 2010). But natural and anthropogenic factors in the mangroves around Mui Ca Mau have caused erosion along the East Sea and accretion along the Gulf of Thailand.…”

“…Although these forests have been studied systematically in many parts of the world for flora and fauna composition/distribution, vegetation dynamics, forest loss and evolution, predictable future trends, etc. (Berger et al 2008;Massó i Alemán et al 2010;Satyanarayana et al 2011), the topics evaluating their significance in the local livelihoods are limited (e.g., Walters et al 2008), and none are available for West Africa (although much information exists in French ''grey literature''-reports, thesis research, etc. ).…”
