The Management of Testicular Seminomas, 1979

Abstract: The reported results from throughout the world of modern treatment of testicular seminoma are reviewed for the various clinical stages of disease. The three-year survival rate for 1,346 patients with Stage 1 and 2 disease is 91%. Since the review reveals considerable differences in staging methods, a clinically useful staging system is proposed. Treatment methods are described and discussed. Recommendations are made assuming that patients so treated are clinically evaluated for extent of disease before treatme… Show more

“…R of irradiation to areas of potential or actual lymph node metastases is the treatment of choice for patients with seminoma confined to the testis (Stage I) or to the testis and retroperitoneal lymph nodes (Stage 11), and the resultant overall cure rates are However, for the 5% to 10% of patients with testicular seminoma presenting with metastases beyond the retroperitoneal lymph nodes (Stage 111), 5-year survival with radiation therapy alone may be as low as 20%.i. 3 In addition, 40% to 50% of patients with bulky abdominal metastases relapse after irradiation."
